Dear Catholic Answers,
I just read your question about priestly faculties, and I was a little confused. How is it, then, that specific sacraments when done by schismatic priests, such as confessions, are invalid? I’ve been told it’s because they don’t have the proper faculties. Is it because they don’t have a proper bishop so they don’t have faculties?

Hi,

If a priest is in schism he is hardly going to have faculties from a Catholic bishop. Such faculties will have been suspended.

Weddings is a separate matter. A priest must always ask for faculties from the pastor of the parish where the wedding is taking place for each wedding he intends to witness.
