I am very concerned over a problem that I find myself in at this time of my life. I am 67 and due to certain unfortunate circumstances, my family consists on just me and my son. He is 43 yrs old. He has been attending a bible organization called The Vineyard. I find myself alone except for him, living upstate and we are the only family left. The rest of my family has died and/or scattered and dysfunctional. My dilemma is we are both planning our last wishes in case either one of us die. I am a Catholic and want a Catholic funeral and buried in a Catholic Cemetary. He does not want this. He wants a cremation and does not want to be buried in a Catholic Cemetary. He says he doesn’t believe it necessary. I raised him Catholic, and he attended school up to Catholic High School. I am his beneficiary. How can I as his mother and Catholic woman set up a protestant funeral and bury him or scatter ashes as he feels these are his wishes. What does the church say on this matter. I told him he may need to find someone else as his beneficiary, because I do not think I can do this. Would it be a sin if I did do this. A priest said it is his wishes and Jesus said to love one another and my son is his son. Huh? Priests “personal opinion”. Could not get an answer on Church Teaching. God Bless.
