I know that transvestites and men/women that don’t feel right about their sex and want to become a member of the other sex have been around on this Earth for ages (just look at some literature written by the ancient Greeks). But nowadays, science has made it possible for them to actually ‘fulfill their desire’ so to speak to become a member of the opposite sex. I’m wondering: what are your opinions on this phenomenon? Is it something you are born with or is it caused by environmental factors, or a combination of both? Is it a sin to feel that way, or is it only a sin when you undergo an operation to change your sex? What is the official Catholic point of view on this matter, and are there biblical references to support it - whether literal or metaphorical references?

Please don’t feel annoyed by this cascade of questions - they are only meant to orientate the topic.

An operation cannot change your gender. That is determined by your DNA. So if your DNA says you’re male, all the surgery in the world is nothing but cosmetic. I think the Church’s position would be that it amounts to body mutilation; and that is not morally permissible.

I totally agree…no amount of surgery will change what you are…period…

A person’s sex is not a product of the environment. It is a deliberate act of Will by God.

‘Transexuality’ is the product of a deluded (or ill) mind.
