What am I supposed to do during a Tridentine Mass?

I don’t read out of my missal much. I have a pocket Treasury of the Sacred Heart that has the order of mass and prayers you can say at the mass.

I just pray at the mass. When it’s the penitential part of the mass, I ask for forgiveness, at the readings I ask God to let me recieve his word that I can live it, at the lavabo I ask to be cleansed, at the offering I offer my self as a living sacrifice, after communion I bask in Christ.

Sometimes I pray a rosary, sometimes my mind wanders, sometimes I’m tired and can’t focus much so I just pray in my mind ‘Lord, have mercy on me’.

The Catholic Truth Society (CTS) published a great little pamphlet by Fr Richard Whinder called : The Extraordinary Form of the Mass Explained [ISBN:978-1-86082-545-3]. It’s 50 pages long and explaines all the parts of the mass in a simple way.

When I went to the TLM this past Sunday, I didn’t bring in my usual large missal. I just took the missalette plus the program for Sunday that contained the hymns, propers, etc in them for Laetare Sunday. It was nice at times to just sit, stand or kneel without the missal or other papers in hand to take it all in. I admit I do not know all of the responses by heart yet.

I usually follow along in my missal. I try to really pray the mass. I am sometimes struck by what a great honor it is to be a priest!
