What are Anti-popes?

I was looking thgough a list of the Popes and they had the anti-popes. I was never told, What is an Anti-pope?
 
They are pretenders to the Chair of St. Peter. False Popes.

An antipope is someone who claims to be Pope, but who was never legally or officially elected to the office.

Sort of like me claiming to be President. I’d be an anti-president. 🙂
 
I thought it was whichever Pope is sitting to the left of the dealer.

There is a web site for a Pope Pius XIII. I think he is a current antipope, but I could be mistaken. He may just be an individual crackpot. :hmmm:

I read about anitpopes on the Pope Chart that I bought from Angelus Press. The same chart is available at the Vatican.

Its possible to be both, you know , an antipope and an individual crackpot simultaneously. The 2 roles aren’t mutually exclusive.

From what I read on his site, he thinks he’s Pope because he reforces to acknowledge Vatican II… I don’t really get who elected him 😛 I’m guessing the mailman.

The kind of anti-Popes that make these lists are not generally crackpots (indeed, sometimes it is the Pope who is the crackpot). There have been several episodes in the history of the church when genuine schism erupted and it was near to impossible for the laity to know that their Pope was, or was not, acting with valid authority as bishop of Rome.

A lot of the qualities we take for granted about the Papacy were not ironed out in centuries past. Therefore these Popes/Anti-Popes can be important in church history.
