What are Catholic teachings on Protestant baptism & communion?

At a recent Protestant baptism (the mother was raised Catholic), I would not receive communion. I believe since there are no Sacraments in their Church, the host was simply bread and not the body of Christ. I was also dismayed to see Catholics receive the host as I don’t think they understand our Faith. Also, was this baptism valid? Again, without our Sacraments, I don’t understand taking part in these services. Please correct me if I’m wrong.
