What does it mean to carry out your duties of state for empty nesters or parents with grown kids living at home? If you’re married with older children what would your duties of state be? Not just in regard to children, but how do you discern Gods will about what to do with extra time now that kids are grown? How much leisure is ok? I feel lazy, lol. More importantly, how do I tell if I’m failing to carry them out and falling into sin?

You might need to define what you mean by “duties of state”. That phrase has no particular meaning to me.

I guess I mean obligations, how you’re supposed to spend your time, habits you should cultivate, etc. How do you live in a way that is pleasing to Jesus and Mary?

Pray daily and maybe find some activity that would let you give back to your church and community.

Other than that, just live your life like a normal person.

Worrying about “too much leisure” seems a bit overscrupulous, but maybe it’s because I always seem to have an oversupply of tasks.

I would echo what Tis_Bearself said. Pray, look for opportunities in the local church or in the community to participate in the benefit of others.

Praying to get grandbabies then spoiling said grandbabies.

Depend of what your conditions of living are. Are you working? Living in appartment, or have a garden? In a city? etc?
  • You can use your spare time to read good edifying books (about Catholicism, family values, theology, prayer… classical books of litterature or faith that you never had the time to read before).
  • You can engage yourselve as a volunteer for charitable work to help other people in need (homeless, families in need, pregnant women, migrants etc etc). . You can do the same for cultural, sportive etc work. And make a difference in your community. Retired people/ people without children carry a lot all the volunteer work!
  • You can grow your won vegetable/fruits/flowers to eat more healthier without pesticide. Active work in the outside benefit your health, as long as you preserve yourselve.
  • You can make homemade work such as knitting, sewing, cooking, or take time to grow passions such as music or painting alone or with a group.
  • You can engage in political movement.
  • AND you have now the time to engage in your parish and catholic associations! Catholic structure need a lot of volunteers and retired people to run!
And I would advise you to not wait indefinitely to make things, time run much more faster when you are old, according to my older family members. retired people are, as a paradox, always active and never available!
