Once I attended a parish other than my own. In their bulletin there was an “ordination bann”. I understand wedding banns, but I had never seen ordination banns before. What are they?

Essentially, I believe, it works in the same fashion as wedding banns - an announcement is made that a man is about to be ordained to the diaconate with the intent (back in the day at least) for anyone who has objections or knowledge of impediment to come forth and express them. (i.e. someone knows the candidate to have never been baptized, or to be bigamously married, or anything else that would preclude an ordination)

While more ceremonial these days, I have heard a story of someone coming forth after a wedding banns announcement to see the pastor on a little matter concearning the would-be brushing bride. As it turned out, “she” has started life as a “he”… The wedding did not for forward.

Thank you. 🙂 Would the ordination banns only be published in the bulletin of the parish that the prospective deacon belonged to?

Yes. Or perhaps the diocesan newsletter/newspaper.
