One thing that I was reminded of while reading these great answers, was that if your family likes being outdoors, a state park pass would be another great option to get, so that you could visit the state parks in your area.

You can get one and it would end up paying for itself after awhile.

It appears that in your state, it’s good for a full year–year round–once you get one. That’s great! In my state, once the year ends, you have to buy another one. It starts over again with a new calendar year.

I believe it was mentioned in one of the posts – but a beautiful place to go is the Shrine of Mother Cabrini in Golden. The saint had visited this site. It is very special.

Thank you. Yes, my younger son is in 4th grade so we have picked up the free pass to all national parks for 4th graders and have gone hiking in RMNP a few times already. The pass is good through 8/31/2016; just make sure to bring your 4th-grader with you:

Great ideas abound above. Don’t know if anyone has mentioned it, but you could also camp out right in your own back yard - or possbily at a low-priced campsite nearby if you don’t want to travel to one. Boys seem to love to be outdoors - especially at night with flashlights! Borrowing DVD’s from the library for free has already been mentioned, but I would definitely second that one! Just be sure to check the content. Far too many aren’t suitable, but there are a lot that are great. You can always enter the title at the IMBD website to screen for content. Archery in the back yard, horseshoes, tossing any ball or frisbee around to each other, running races, going on long walks (with or without a dog), biking together, and bringing beverages and a meal or snacks in a backpack for a break along the way are also great. Have fun no matter what, and remember that kids grow up way too fast, so enjoy their youth with them! You’ll never regret time spent as a family. God’s blessings always.
