What are some rational reasons against poligamy?

Most of the gay marriage debates have led to the topic of poligamy. But if we can’t show rational reasons to why poligamy is wrong than its a mute point. So I would like to know what are the argument against poligamy?

One quick thought is that it leads to lack of commitment. Marriage gets tough and emotions fade you find someone else to fill the void. So now you have you first in marriage a object only to be loved and used whenever convenient to you. Then you have your second in marriage where your love is built solely an emotion and you totally miss the person. Only to find yourself in another cycle of just moveing to who ever meets you emotional need. Where multiple people in the marriage become an object of use to the ones unchecked desires!

It would break down society were it to be practiced on a large scale. Polygamy causes undue competition between males for mates. Naturally our biology makes it so about 50% of humans that are born are male, and another 50% are female. This lends itself to monogamy. I also don’t think it takes a rocket scientist to figure out that no male can give himself completely to two females at the same time. Some women may be ok with that but they shouldn’t. The fact that they are ok with it is either a testament to how religious they are, or a sign of how much of a failure much of the male population is.

As it is today polygamy is rarely practiced and I don’t think we really pursue prosecuting people for it unless there is another problem there besides the practice of polygamy, and as long as the man is not actually “legally” married to more than one person. Were it to start becoming more widespread you would see more of a crackdown on it because the widespread practice of polygamy truly would be a threat to society.

I find all rational reasons just limping on some aspect. Yeah, poligamy is wrong but …yeah…

We are relatives of the monkeys and they are more than poligamists. Ummmm, see the Bonobos…they were forbidden to enter the Zoo as they would cause scandal …

I cannot find another reason than: God wanted monogamy. Jesus was crystal clear about it. Period.
 
Rational, but a little tongue in cheek: A man has four wives. If all of their mothers are alive, that also means he has four mothers-in-law!

That thought ought to make any guy contemplating such an act take pause, and maybe a drink or two as well!😃
 
Only a single person would ask why polygamy is wrong. Read your Old Testament. Every polygamous marriage caused problems for the husband and wives. Also read the Mark 10 and Matthew 19. The only way polygamy works is in a society where women are completely oppressed ( i.e. traditional Muslim or Hindu) National Geographic magazine recently did an article on polygamy and child brides, check out your library. Also, read some biographies of women who escaped from polygamous marriages. I read one a couple years ago and for the life of me I can’t remember the title. Go to Amazon and search FLDS, wife, escape. Good Luck.
 
If I had seven wives, it may seem fun but I wouldn’t be able to love them all the same.

Plus, my children, would they have seven mothers or six aunts or what?

Also, imagine what it would be like if you forgot to put the rubbish out! :eek:
 
I would say polygamy is against natural law because we are pair-bonders by nature. Just ask your biologists. Or just look around, polygamy is not widely practiced in the world for a reason—we were made to be monogamous. That is the main point. But besides that, I would say that the end of the reproductive organs is reproduction with the subsequent goal of child-rearing in familial union. Proper child-rearing won’t take place in a polygamous relationship, the father will not have time to adequately raise each of his kids. Furthermore, the essence of a marriage is love between the spouses, but in a polygamous marriage, this love will be impeded as the man will neglect some spouses over the others.
