The great Pope Innocent III died on July 16, 1216. The same day, he appeared to St. Lutgarda in her monastery at Aywieres in Brabant, today’s Belgium. He told her that he was making expiation for faults that might have caused his eternal perdition, but for the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary. He told her that his suffering would last for centuries and asked, in the name of Mary, who obtained for him the favor of appealing to St. Lutgarda, for her assistance to mitigate his punishment.
Anybody knows what are the sins of Pope Innocent III who was so good and yet has to spend some time in Purgatory?

I’ve read that story too and it just goes to show that we ALL are accountable after our death whether pope or regular man or woman…and that ANY of us can end up in purgatory…

I dont know what sins sent him there but I can imagine when god told him he was sentanced to purgatory he was singing gods praises that he was saved and had a chance to cleanse his soul and one day enter heaven…🙂

But the story says that the good and pious Pope Innocent III was to stay in Purgatory for many centuries, and not just a very short time.

Centuries in purgatory is more preferable to an eternity in hell…once in hell you are there forever…at least in purgatory you WILL go to heaven one day…plus with the help of the church those in purgatory cleansing can be hastened so they can go to heaven sooner…

If god offered me purgatory or hell I know which id pick and id be very thankfull too 🙂

I thought the concept of “time” as we measure it stops with death - God being outside of time - and thus I don’t understand applying concepts of time measurement such as “centuries” to life after death.

True, I think what they mean is the time spent in Purgatory is just approximated to the time if one is to spend that suffering on Earth
