What are the steps to return to Catholicism?

I’ve been away from the Catholic church for over 30 years. I have been attending Mass for the past two years but have not received communion. I am hesitant to return to Confession as I don’t know if there are any formal requirements for returning to the faith. Would a contrite confession be adequate for me to receive communion again? If not what would be the steps to return to Catholicism?
