What are the top priority must read documents of the Holy See for any catechumen to learn contemporary Catholicism efficiently?
 
I would always start with the idea that reading Magisterial documents with the purpose of self educating for a catechumen is a not a good idea, nor is it efficient in any way.

There are references to other documents written during the almost 2000 year long history of the Catholic Church. You need to know the basics first before going into other documents that are written either for clergy or laity or both.

This all day. The CCC is the “sure norm” of the Catholic faith. And I personally recommend simply going to the CCC that the vatican promulgates, not the USCCB distillation of it. In an attempt for a more pastoral tone, the USCCB version muddies the content, in my opinion. The official vatican CCC is simple and concise.

AND get with a mentor, pastor, or group at the parish to help you absorb it. One that gives full assent to the teaching.
