While I always have several good religious books in the mix, I’m looking for some good non-religious books to read - or to listen, I do audio books when I am busy.

My first love is non-fiction, I enjoy a good auto/biography, medical/science non-fiction is probably top of my list (I’m wait listed at the library for “Educated” by Tara Westover).

I’m currently reading “Mutants” by Armand Marise Leroi

My second favorite is Sci Fi. I’m not a “fantasy” fan, prefer “hard Science Fiction” and I do love me a good saga (the Southern Reach Trilogy was a good read, as was Justin Cronin’s “The Passage” Trilogy).

So, suggestions?

Warnings? For instance, I wanted to begin the “Commwealth” Saga by Peter F Hamilton, however, the quality of the audiobook is so bad that I cannot even listen to it!

There was another one I read awhile back, it was supposed to be first in a series but the series never continued (forgot the name, the premise was sentient animals used as “witnesses” for people and a big spaceship as ark tale).

As far as science fiction goes, I really like C.S. Lewis’s space trilogy. Chesterton’s stories are all wonderful, and Tolkien has other good books besides the Lord of the Rings.

Warren Carroll’s The History of Christendom is also a fascinating read. He’s an excellent nonfiction author. I would recommend starting with something other than the History if you don’t want to make a significant time investment.

Not a fan of fantasy, never could read Tolkien.

The Sci Fi classics have all been read. Looking for some undiscovered gems!

You should look into Carroll. He really turns history into a story.

I can think of 5 authors named “Carroll”, do you have one in mind?

ETA: Ahh, History of Christendom. It is on my bookshelf. Read those years ago

I’m an old lady who was homeschooled and I’ve read most of the classics. What I am seeking is some inspiration for some unexplored authors or titles in the areas of Science, Medicine, History of Science/Medicine or of Science Fiction.

He has written other history books. I have only read Our Lady of Guadalupe and the Conquest of Darkness, but I found that excellent.

The main science I read is theology, so…

We Band of Angels about nurses in WW2 (also available in audiobook).
Madam Curie: A Biography by Eve Curie

If you like historical novels, all of James Michener’s books are available on audiobooks. I have not listened to any of them yet and some of the reviews did not favor the narrator but from the samples it sounded okay to me.

Not a big historical novel fan, I read maybe one each year. Mitchner does a good job with those as does McCollugh.

Will look for the other two on Hoopla!!

American Moonshot by Douglas Brinkley
Apollo by Charles Murray
Black Death at the Golden Gate by David Randall
The Wright Brothers by David McCullough

All available in audiobook.
