Just curious to see what other forum folk are reading currently. Books, periodicals, whatever (but I would like to keep it stuff in print, not web-sites). Feel free to give a brief description or review. Also, feel free to list recently read books, or what’s next of the “to-read” list. Here is what I’m reading:

Current reads:

The Shaping of Middle Earth – J.R.R. Tolkien – Collection of early notes, drafts, etc. from when Tolkien was first creating his magical world. I’m not a big enough Tolkien geek to follow all of it, but I have read the Silmarillion so I get most of it. Interesting to see how the fiction developed.
Code:
*The Agricola and Germania* – Tacitus – Actually two short books: Tacitus’ short bio of his father-in-law and Governor of Britain in the late first century, and his account of the German peoples of his time. I have some German blood in me, so I am more interested in the latter.

*Star Trek: Eugenics Wars volume II* – Not normally a “trekkie” but my favorite Trek movie was “Wrath of Kahn” and this series is about Khan’s history. Fun, fast paced fiction. Mixes Trek-lore with real events.

*National Catholic Register* – My favorite catholic news paper.

*Linux Magazine* – Good open source magazine, but the info is getting too superficial. I might switch to something else when my subscription is up.

   **Recently Completed:**
The Dolorous Passion Of Our Lord Jesus Christ – Ann Catherine Emmerich: Even if the guy who transcribed her visions embellished it, it is still great spiritual reading. It has been very helpful when I pray the sorrowful mysteries.

Next Up:
Triumph: The Power and the Glory of the Catholic Church – Crocker: I am little skeptical that anyone can present a decent 2000 year history of the church in one volume, but all the reviews are good, so I’ll try it.

Spiritual Reading:
True Devotion to Mary, Imitation of Christ.

Leisure Reading:
Finishing “Talismans of Shannara.” Will soon be reading Half Blood Prince.

I’m in the last few pages of the Chronicles of Narnia. Haven’t decided whether I want my next book to be spritual, apologetic, or leisure yet.

My time is necessarily split between work-related reading (surgery, medicine, tissue engineering); my private academic interests (ethics, philosophy, theology); and recreational reading (fiction, history or related to hobbies, such as photography).

Presently, I am finishing the Chronicles of Narnia. I appreciate them differently from when I was a child. I am also reading History of Beauty, ed. Umberto Eco, and God and the World, by then-Cardinal Ratzinger.

Chronicles of Narnia here too!!! Just finishing up.

The Journal of Elisabeth Lasseur

Jane Eyre----I read this as a teen, but am experiencing it differently now.

I just finished reading Hundred Secret Senses by Amy Tan—kind of a light and fluffy sort of read.

Christ is My Life—Marcial Maciel (Legionaries of Christ founder)

I’m interested in seeing what others on this thread are reading—just for new ideas!!!

Just finished the Chronicles of Narnia. I enjoyed them! I enjoyed Lion, Witch, Wardrobe the best.

I’m currently reading History of Christianity, by Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger (now Pope Benedict XVI); Crossing the Threshold of Hope, by Pope John Paul II; The Painted Garden, by Mary Woodin; Franciscan Prayer, by Ilia Delio; and Lonesome Dove, by Larry McMurtry (the latter is for my book group).

There are also some books that I just read a little from each day, like the Imitation of Christ, and the Message of St. Francis.

You have great taste. My son is reading Narnia, I’m reading Jane Eyre, and I read Christ Is My Life last year. I also have Love and Responsibility, but I haven’t gotten far. —KCT

Recently read:

Utopia– Thomas More

The Prince– Machiavelli

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince– J.K. Rowling

In the middle of:
John Adams– David McCullough

Dracula– Bram Stoker

A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man– James Joyce (To think I read through all the hard parts, and stopped halfway through the last chapter!)

To read:
Grendel

Currently reading Mere Christianity and The Screwtape Letters by CS Lewis. About 50% through both.

The Story of a Soul - almost finished

Divine Mercy in My Soul (Diary of St. Maria Faustina Kowalska) - nearly finished, but it’s taken me almost a year.

Imitation of Christ - not a cover to cover read, but a chapter a day or two a week before Mass.

About five other books I pick up and read a few times a month that God willing, I’ll finish someday before I die! And of course daily Scripture readings–right now I’m sort of into comparing text from my NAB and RSV bibles.

Other than that, I read meditations from several St. Alphonsus books. I find I don’t basically have any other reading genre for the past few years. I’m not quite as cerebral in my readings as some of the other posters, but I’m not quite as disciplined as I’d like to be when it comes to actually finishing a cover-to-cover book.

*Screwtape *is certainly well worth it. I’ve never read Mere Chirstianity, though. Neither my public library nor my school library (and I go to Catholic school!) have it. I’ll buy it one of these days.

Oooh, I read Jane Eyre last year for summer reading. I abhored it. So pointless! I suppose it’s too much of a chick book for me, though. It’s just so long, and seemingly random with it’s story. It did teach me a useful lesson in humility though, ;).

I actually got a box set of 6 of his works. These were in it. I am really enjoying it and hope to read the other 4 (plus 3 more I get in a one volumn set). I have other books I want to get to before I read those.

Rob, Jane Eyre is most definitely a chick book. I think most of us “chicks” identify with Jane:thumbsup:
