What are you thoughts on the original (classical) DOOM games (doom 1 and doom2)?

Please note, that I am not talking about the new doom games (2016, and this last one), but those from the 90s.

I’ve been back to the doom games in 2016, but more as multiplayer coop mode and asked a question on this forum if that was alright (playing multiplayer with real people and such) - I played it a little, but multiplayer is just not for me.

Now, after years, I was thinking about replaying the games - this time single player mode - because of the good memories I guess - similar to when you want to re-watch a movie you liked a long time ago.

Have you ever played the games? Do you think it would be ok to play the games?
Thank you all in advance, looking forward to your replies!

God bless you all.

I remember them well, as revolutionary games which changed the gaming world with their advanced graphics. They were very highly regarded both for their gameplay and technical advances on the limited machines of the day.

I enjoyed Doom a bit, but never really got into FSP (First Person Shooter) games. I was always more into aircraft and car simulators.

However, from time to time I’ve run a youtube video of the original Doom out of curiosity, and I must say I’m impressed!

The next game in that genre to break new ground was Quake (late 90s). I expect the original Quake still looks good to day.

By all means try them out, and see if you enjoy them as much as you once did.

I hope you do!

Thank you Edmundus1581!

Do you still play any games? I was never patient enough to get into the simulations (I remember trying to get in to flight simulator games… yikes). So then I just settled for Arcades.

I still enjoy X-Box car racing games, especially the Colin McRae rally series, and the Need for Speed Series. My favourite game of all time is Need for Speed - Porsche 2000, on PC.

My son, while he was still with me until about 25 years old, played the various COD and Battlefield games heavily, and also NBA. He, like me, never really got into fantasy shooters. The preference for “realism” seems to have been inherited!

It’s always been my dream to set up a dedicated PC with a flight simulator, but I haven’t got around to that yet. Yes, it would take time and patience, plus the patience to learn to “fly” properly, which is very different from the arcade experience.

I played through Doom a number of years ago and I enjoyed it (at the time, I was an atheist). Nowadays, I would never go back to playing them because they are too violent for me. The Lord has made it clear to me that I’m not allowed to play video games that have graphic violence or blasphemy. I can’t recall if there are any pentagrams, but I know that there are some inverted crosses in Doom 1.

Should you play Doom? I don’t know, that’s between you and the Lord. I personally would never play them. Right now I’m playing Animal Crossing and I’m loving it. 😀

That brings back memories!
I borrowed an old Token-Ring concentrator (that gives an idea of how long ago this was) and hooked a couple of PCs together to play DOOM in DeathMatch mode with my late wife.
What says “love” better than lobbing rockets at your better half?

You made me laugh as I used to play Doom and Quake with my teen son (at the time)…nothing better than telling someone you’re busy fragging your son! 😂

I can’t comment on the ethics of playing violent games as I’m not religious. From my point of view they are great fun as nostalgia and all you’re killing is pixels. I love those games and launch them on occasion just have fun.

I’m especially a fan of Doom 2. It’s just fun to play. The level designs nicely mix things up with close quarters combat followed by wide areas of just armies of monsters in every direction followed by platform puzzling.

Not the most recent remakes, but there was a Doom sequel a few years back and one criticism was monsters were hiding in corners and cubby holes waiting to strike. I always found that complaint interesting because that was the bread and butter of the early dooms, but time marches on I guess.

Im the Doom games you play as a marine fighting and killing demons from Hell and striking back against Satan’s minions. I cannot think of a game more wholesome than that.
