What Bible should Catholics use?

I have The New American Bible.

Is the the “Catholic authorized” version?

This is a quote fron Sungenis’ website that causes me some concern:

“Here is the rub. The NAB is still the Bible, and we certainly cannot burn the Bible, or throw it in a landfill, or anything of the sort. So what exactly should we do with these millions of books? The NAB is the one currently used in the lectionary. Mr. Sungenis tends to be ultra conservative I will say so I don’t think I would completely agree with him. However the NAB’s comments are atrocios in my view and the translation is rather drab and does water down some things. That does not mean it is errant. However I myself like the RSV (Mr. Sungenis may not because of it’s ties to Protestantism). He would probably go with the Jerusalem Bible or Perhas the Douay Rheims (though that as I recall has some Protestant ties as well). Don’t worry two much about the NAB. It is approved by the Magesterium, which Mr. Sungenis is not.

If you are choosing a bible, ensure that it consists, Tobit, Sirach, Wisdom from the Old Testament, that will ensure that you have got the right one.

The very best Catholic bible available is the NEW Catholic Answers Bible, which is edited by Dave Armstrong. This bible is the 2nd edition and hot off the press. What makes this bible superior to others, is that it is chuck full of cross references and doctrinal subjects fully explained with beautiful color illustrations. The 1st edition only held 40 doctrinal discourses, but this new, 2nd edition now covers EIGHTY. This bible should be in every Catholic home. I like the Jerusalem Bible and I also have two copies of Today’s English Version, but those have the *sola *(Romans 3)in them. I still like the translation, though; it’s easy to read. I have a small pocket-size of the New Testament, Psalms, and Proverbs that is translated by that company that puts the bibles in hotels. I like it too and it doesn’t have the *sola *addition. Plus, it has a little section at the front where it lists a whole bunch of verses for different kinds of situations: if you’re sad, lonely, angry, having a problem with something, feeling lost, God’s love, ect. I think it’s great. Another cool thing about it is that it has John 3:16 in like 15 different languages.

The DR has “she shall crush thy head,” “Hail, full of grace,” “My soul doth magnify the Lord,” and “the Lamb, which was slain since the beginning of the world.”

The NAB has “he shall strike at your head,” “Hail, favored one,” “My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,” and “the Lamb who was slain.” (Gen 3:15, Luke 1, Rev. 13:8).

It’s interesting that the verse that demonstrates the perpetuity of Christ’s sacrifice that is contained in the Mass no longer makes it sound perpetual. It’s also interesting that two distinctly Catholic prayers found directly in the Bible (the Hail Mary and the Magnificat) are no longer found–try praying those with the NAB translation, ugh! Why would they want to deemphasive the role of Our Lady and deemphasize the Mass, two things offensive to Protestants?

The official Catholic version of the Bible, the Latin Vulgate, uses “gratia plena” which translates as full of grace, not highly favored. Likewise, the Italian version on the Vatican website uses “piena di grazia,” which translates as “full of grace” as well. The reason why the NAB, the English version is different, is because the American bishops pushed really hard for it (they had translations rejected a few times). Finally, the Vatican accepted it.

How does the DRB have ties to Protestantism?

I had heard somewhere that the translators of the DRB did borrow from the translators of the KJV. I can’t find it anywhere on the net and could be in error. If I find out otherwise I’ll let you know.
