My 16 year old daughter is in counseling for some low self esteem issues. She is a good girl attending a Catholic HS. She wants a boyfriend and feels “less than” not having one. She has had some minor anxiety/depression issues. She is in counseling with a woman therapist (secular). The therapist told me our daughter was at high risk for acting out sexually. She wanted to know if we would allow her to encourage our child to masterbate to help her to deal with her sexual feelings. She said it would empower her. I feel it would do just the opposite; leading to a sexual addiction, messing up her natural desire for her future husband, and degrading herself. I know most teens probably masterbate on occassion. My daughter and I read “every young woman’s battle” a couple of summers ago. It discussed masterbation just as i have above, a terrible addiction to break.
How do i teach my child to deal with her sexual feelings without ecouraging her to sin to relieve herself? this is such a sex saturated society, we try to moderate media. Absolutely no porn or internet stuff happening. But it is all around us anyway; TV commercials, the Mall, etc. I can’t lock her in the closet. She does not date yet, just groups of friends and that is mostly with all girls still. Please help me to figure out the best course of action.

Hi,

I think I would find another counselor if I were you. I’m glad she asked you before giving that advice. But she still doesn’t sound like she’s on your wave length.

I encourage you to check out chastity.com. It’s a Catholic Answers ministry to young people. There are many resources there that can be of great help to you daughter.
