Driving through downtown, I noticed a sort of solemn parade. It consisted of gentlemen dressed in slightly military garb, both leading and walking behind a priest. The priest was carrying the host in the brass/golden display. In addition, there were various people carrying candles.
It sounds like you witnessed a procession of the Blessed Eucharist. The container the priest was holding was probably a monstrance, which is used to display the host for adoration. The gentlemen dressed in the “military-like” garb were probably Knights of Columbus in their dress regalia.
Note: Nod to participant Della for identifying the gentlemen escorting the priest.
