What do bishops do in their spare time? (If they have any)

Do they go for tea with priests or meet up with other bishops?

Do they go to the cinema or something?

Thanks.

Anything any other normal human being would do for fun.

Our Bishop was a runner, so it was not unusual to see him in shorts and a t-shirt running through the neighborhood. He also loved baseball, so he was at our local AAA league games as often as he could.
He also enjoyed watching baseball and college football on TV.

He enjoys movies, plays and the orchestra too.

well… it depends. Some are workaholics.

It is pretty well known secret that my archbishop would work from 4 or 5 in the morning until 9 or 10 PM every night and then have dinner (often by himself) at the TGI Fridays near the seminary, where he lives. From what I understand, he would typically put on civilian clothes when he was eating alone as to not draw the restaurant unwanted attention (the staff all know who he is).

But my archbishop also loves to write. He want to writes more books when he retires and often writes articles for First Things and other publications.

Any hobby or pastime that you might have, from video games to hunting to Crossfit to golf to playing RPGs.

They are ordinary human beings, just like the rest of us, I expect they will do the varied, normal sorts of things that the rest of us do to relax.

I think the important questions are do popes have spare time? What do they do in it? (besides taking naps).

Shovel snow so that the priest buddies living in the same house don’t slip and injure themselves.

It has always surprised me that those bishops, pastors of really large parishes etc have the time to write all the books they write. Sometimes two hands are needed in order to lift the books.

I just looked at my bishop´s calendar for the coming 1 1/2 month and I got tired. Three international trips and lots of meetings and visits in the diocese. 😪

They have as much free time as they allow themselves.

In NYS, the Bishops meet at least once a year for a general meeting.
Our former Bishop and another Bishop from NYS had been friends since seminary. They vacation together and now that they are both retired, they get together more often for social events and retreats.

Bishops are people too, and need to have relationships and fun. Why would you think any different?

The Church recognizes that priests (bishops, even popes) NEED recreation. Our Diocese requires X days of vacation, X days of retreat per year of the clergy.

Christ took time away from the crowds. Leisure, rest, relaxation is vital to our health.

Amen to that. I forget sometimes that priests are “real people” They might like the same things that I do-sports, music, movies, time with their cat.

And that is so true that we all need to learn how to relax and unwind.

In fact, you might ask your priest to go with you to play/attend a sporting event, to the movies, fishing, to a concert, etc.
