For all those wondering:
Channel Awesome was kind of kickstarted due to frustrations with the excessively strict copyright system on YouTube during its early days. Most notably, Doug Walker, who did comedy reviews under his character The Nostalgia Critic, was hit with copyright strikes from major corporations like Lionsgate, and he, his brother, and Mike Michaud kicked off Channel Awesome in response. Others also went to Channel Awesome for similar reasons. It was, as far as I know, mostly known for movie and video game reviews, sketches, and a few low budget movies. While it obviously never touched YouTube’s numbers, it was still a highly coveted place to work for many content creators, and it gave off the impression of being a strong community.
Change The Channel, largely sparked by a document called “Not So Awesome”, kind of changed that perception. It showcased some of Mike Michaud’s rather toxic and volatile behavior, and it painted the Walkers as at least incompetent managers (some would say equally as toxic). Some of the more serious allegations included firing someone because she had surgery, forcing that same woman to sign a contract that she wouldn’t seek work in the same industry for three years, and mishandling sexual grooming and assault allegations. In general, though, many of the complaints can be summarized as the content creators feeling that the sense of community that Channel Awesome had had been betrayed by the Walkers and Michaud.
Needless to say, Channel Awesome’s response was pretty terrible, and their “we regret you feel this way” line has become infamous among those who talk about the issue. Either way, the platform bled content creators, to the point that it is basically just Michaud and the Walkers last I heard.
