What do Catholics believe happened to the “image of God” when man fell? Is a person totally fallen with nothing good in him, or does the “image” remain and if so in what way?
The Image of God in man was wounded, stained, or distorted. This is why the Son of God, who is the Image of God, assumed our humanity in order to restore the Divine Image in man, to heal man of his sickness. There are various images of the fallen human nature: sickness, a wound, a cracked mirror. Jesus, the God-Man, is called the Physican of souls, for He came to heal man.
Eucharisted is correct. We still have the image and likeness of God, but like all of creation, it has been distorted.
Some of the things that comprise the image and likeness of God are an immortal soul, the ability to love, the capacity to judge right from wrong, and the capability to contemplate the eternal. Basically, we still have all of these things, but some of them are goofed up.
For example, sometimes, we do not love but we lust. Or we treat people that we love the same way we treat objects that we love.
