I caught a documentary on the Catholic station about Saint Elizabeth of Hungary and I liked it very much.

I have written about this topic before so I will provide some of my thoughts here and would very much welcome what other posters have to contribute about the life of Saint Elizabeth.

With regards to the show that talked about Saint Elizabeth Of Hungary… the first part of the show discussed Robin Hood and the values of fighting for the poor. This was something that I was very happy to see. To now know that folks across America in Catholic families and non-Catholic families who watch ewtn will learn about the great figures of the Middle Ages.

Saint Elizabeth Was born to the king of Hungary in the 13th century. She would later Marry to Louis a knight who went on the sixth crusade and died fighting for the holy land. Elizabeth always had a Soft side for the poor something her husband respected. But members of Her Husbands family disagreed with Elizabeth using her royal gains to help the poor. She was thrown out of her castle upon the death of Louis only to be rescued and reinstated by her late husbands supporters when they returned from crusading. Elizabeth could have gone on to a life of Riches but she decided to use a position of power to help those in need.

Though Elizabeth died very young at the age of 24 she was renowned for helping the poor and showing that all lives matter not those of the rich and elite. In Hungary and through Europe her name evokes pride to this day.

In addition various miracles are attributed to the Saint . One was After Elizabeths death a man saw a vision of Elizabeth and she came to him. This man was suffering from a broken arm. But Elizabeth said raise your arm brother And so the man raised his arm and miraculously he was healed.

That’s a very interesting story. Thanks for sharing. I’ve never heard of her until now.

I remember hearing about her as one of the various monarchs who became Saints. She certainly is a role model for persons in power and political offices…

St. Elizabeth of Hungary is patroness of the Secular Franciscan Order. St. Francis established the Secular Franciscan Order in 1221. In 1228, just two years after St. Francis’ death, Elizabeth became a Secular Franciscan.
In church art, St. Elizabeth of Hungary often appears holding many roses in her apron. According to the story, her in-laws thought that caring for the poor was beneath her. So, as Elizabeth was carrying in her apron bread for the poor, her husband asked to see what she was carrying. She opened her apron and there were roses!
St. Elizabeth died in 1231. Pope Gregory IX canonized her in 1235.

My confirmation classes included a lot of stuff about saints and she was one of them. Really amazing role model for us!
