What do guys think of love stories?

I’m really interested in film and storytelling, and am writing a book at the moment. I like writing sort of epic stories that cover all things in life: life, love, loss, etc. I’d like to make stories that can be appreciated by both men and women, and I’m afraid of alienating the male audience because I do like putting love stories into things.

Do guys like love stories? I don’t mean “romance” stories so much as a real darn good love story. Something universal (When I am writing this, it sounds silly because I know if something is well done it is usually universal and liked). For instance, I really liked the love story from The Wind Rises by Hayao Miyazaki. Do guys like love stories like that? Real sweet, innocent, and classic where both the man and woman love each other and they are not unequally yoked in it. Love stories that could move you to tears. I know my dad cries real easily and isn’t ashamed of it, but I think my guy friends of this generation would be shy to.

I don’t want to be writing something impossible or uncomfortable for guys, but in my heart I am a romantic. I want to be true to my heart but not create fantasy worlds. I really want to hear what you guys think.
 
Look at the stories that have endured through human history, mostly written and studied by men.

Yes, men can enjoy love stories.
 
Apart from Ruth and Tobias love stories, I like very much the love stories by Oscar Wilde.

The Picture of Dorian Gray is one of my favorite books. I have not read other works of his though!
 
I like love stories, but I’m not a fan of romance novels, even the clean ones.

In a romance novel it seems that every page or so the female “felt a tingle go up her spine at his touch” or some other such nonsense. I can take that once or twice in a book, but not over and over again.

I’ve published three books, and while all of them have love stories, they are classified as Christian suspense novels. The book I’m working on now explores the (entirely platonic) love between two women who have been friends since Kindergarten but end up going their separate ways, both geographically and spiritually, and what the one who remains Christian does to help the other find her way back into the faith.

There’s no reason why a love story has to be restricted to a romance. It can be about the love between a parent and child, between brothers and sisters, between friends. There’s also no reason why even a romance has to end up with the man and woman staying together–think what a wonderful ending Casablanca has!

Since I’m not a guy, I can’t really say what they think of love stories, but I would like to think that anybody, male or female, enjoys a good tale that has a love story in it. 🙂
