What do I do about the sins of others around me?

Are we responsible for always correcting those around us who sin publicly? For instance, if I hear someone lie to someone, do I have to tell them not to lie? I do that from time to time and people really get angry and anoyed with me. Some people plain don’t listen to me or anybody else for that matter. Is it ever ok just to stay silent in the face of sin?

No, we do not have to correct those around us who sin publicly. No, we do not have to have to tell someone we hear lying not to lie.
And yes, it is sometimes ok, (and the best thing to do) to just stay silent in the face of sin.

No way. Of course you have to use prudence to choose your battles but one cannot be in the presence of sin and not say something. To do that would to be in some way complicit in the sin.

Sorry. The Catholic catechism states clearly that we have an obligation to admonish those in sin. I do not believe it says we must do so publicly however. Furthermore, correcting the sinner is a actually considered to be a work of mercy. So I’m afraid I would have to disagree with you.

As was stated above, we can not be silent, but we must be prudent. If we are silent and do not complain, then it is as if we are saying, “I have no problem with this.” Instead, we must admonish the sinner. The doesn’t mean publically interupting a conversatin and saying, “Excuse me, you shouldn’t lie to this poor gentleman.” Rather, pull the person aside later, state what you observed, let them defend themselves, and if you are still convinced of the existance of sin, let them know you disapprove.

Really, that’s all there is to it. Afterwards, if you feel obligated to let the person lied to know about hte truth, that’s dependent on the case. Furthermore, if you have repeatedly told person of your disapproval for an activity, it is not necessary to continue to do so. They are aware of your opinion, so you are no longer accomplicing.

My brothers, if anyone among you should stray from the truth and someone bring him back, he should know that whoever brings back a sinner from the error of his way will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins.

But as so many of you have stated, prudence must be exercised. We must allow the Holy Spirit to guide us in these delicate matters.

I’ve been trying to find the CCC passage on this without success.
Can you tell me which CCC number to look at?
