I attend Confession on a fairly regular basis… approximately every 2-3 months. I always begin my confession with “The Big One” – whatever it is that has been weighing the most on me – and often, this one sin (it is different every time) will lead to a great deal of discussion with my priest. After a long discourse on the one subject, he’ll say, “and you’re sorry for everything else, right?” and I’ll say “Most certainly” and he absolves me of “all” of my sins, even the ones I didn’t confess because he has indicated to me that we are done.
I no longer leave the confessional feeling unburdened, because I am afraid that I should have interrupted and spoken all of my sins, as we are told we must do to be forgiven. But if the priest initiates an exit and wraps up “everything else” in one question, does it count? Can I stop worrying or should I start with the little things next time?
