What do I do with a voo doo doll that someone gave me?

Hello all,

A few years ago a friend bought me a voo doo doll in new Orleans. I’ve had it ever since and it sits on my dresser with a bunch of beanie babies and other nickknacks. I noticed it today while dusting and I’m thinking that maybe I shouldnt have it anymore? I just superstitious or what? Thanks for any insight in advance!

I say you should get rid of it and burn it.

Do not burn it. I would sprinkle holy water on it. Take it to a vacant field and bury it. Do not ever burn occult things. After burying it wash your hands with holy water. I would also bless your room with holy water as well.

I don’t think you should have it but I think burning it’s a bit excessive. Just bin it.
 
I am for burning or dismantling the thing so it no longer represents what it was originally meant to.
Anathema, curious why not burn?

Now I probably should have elaborated on my comment rather than leave it short and sweet. Now there are two camps as to what to do with an occult object. There is one camp who says burn it, and the other camp says don’t burn it and bury it.

It would probably surprise you that I belong to neither camp. When lay people talk of occult objects, I have always recommended them not to burn it but to bury it in the prescribed manner as given above. Now in some cases, objects have been burned, but it was with always a priest present. The priest would sprinkle holy water on the object, bless the object, and then burn it and while the object was burning he would read prayers over it and those involved would be praying as well.

One of the reasons I do not adovcate burning occult objects, is because there are many objects that practitioners of the dark arts attatch a curse to the object that should it be destroyed it would be activated or go to the person who would destroy the object. Now I am not saying this is true of all occult objectes out there, but it is true of many of them. I have seen cases where an occult object has been burned and the person who burns it has suffered ill effects, but it was mediated with the prayers of the priest and those present. I would not want to imagine what it would have been like had the prayers and the priest not been there.

I would also if I could bury an object with exorcised salt as well.

objects have no power. Only God has power. Cut it up and throw it in the trash. Just make it unusable and dump it. It’s only a souvenir.
 
Now I’m really confused! I’ve never done anything with it. My friend was a consulant and travel to NO all the time and I told him to get me one. This was about 10 years ago and I’ve had it ever since and it sits in the same spot all the time. They probably sell millions of them like the one I have. I don’t know why today I took such notice to it and thought that maybe I shouldn’t keep it. Thanks for all the info - I will have to decide what to do!

I disagree. We see time and time again that relics can be infused with power. That touching the body of a holy one can indeed give an object power. The source of that power is ultimately God but the object itself does indeed have power in it.

As for occult objects? I don’t know if they have power or not, but I would not discount the ability of them to be infused with evil.

I would have to disagree with your statement on many fronts. Many exorcists and others write of objects of being cursed and what not. I only thank God and pray to God that you will never have the misfortune of ever running across a cursed object.

What if someone screams and dies horribly when you burn it? And imagine the torment to another if you pull it apart!! :eek:

Well, if that’s the case the stupid bloody thing is harmless and you may as well leave it there as an ornament.

Is it actually a voodoo doll? Its my understanding that these things are merely dolls until you add something from the intended victim to it, ie. a bit of hair and cloth from their garments.

So really, its just a doll designed to look like a “voodoo doll” so I think this thread has gotten a bit out of hand, and I think OP, you’re worried about nothing. And with that said, I know someone who dabbled in this garbage a few years back, and she said the dolls have to be made by hand by the person doing the cursing - who whilst making it is thinking of the cursee, and that they all look different. This thread has wound up fear mongering and over reacting.

It sounds like it was just some trashy doll bought from some tourist shop. If it was ever used in some kind of occultic practice then yeah, you might have a problem, but it is probably highly unlikely.

Either or, if you don’t like it, just bin it. Demonic or not, it can rot in the trash with the dead seagulls and half eaten Big Macs.
