What is there to say?

All Catholics should follow the Magesterium, not nonCatholic websites.

A tract on CAF says the world could’ve been created over time…I think it’s called Evolution, Adam and Eve. Is that the position of the Magesterium? That the universe could
have been created over a long period of time rather than a literal 6 days?

If we are free to believe that the universe was created over a period of time, what about what the article says about “…then the Gospel message is undermined at its foundation because it puts death, disease, thorns and suffering before the Fall.?”

This is not a doctrinal issue and the Church teaches nothing definitive on the subject.

It’s a logical fallacy. Someone stating something doesn’t make it a fact.

So we’re free to believe in a literal 6 days or a long period of time?

What do you mean by logical fallacy? I looked it up but I’m still unsure what it means.

I got that website from a non denominational pastor, who answered some of my questions about their church. I thought about going there, but now plan on staying in the CC.

What do you think about what that article has to say in post #4?
Do you mean objection 4?

It is totally ridiculous because Gods grandness is in no way affected regardless if it’s six days or billions of years. The article assumes billions of years is left to atheistic evolution…pure chance…but that is a false assumption to say God cannot be closely involved over billions of years.

Stay away from websites like these…they are fundamentalist propaganda. The guy that runs this movement believes people used to have pet dinosaurs.

It’s really out there.

Thanks for the warning. I didn’t know. That pastor linked me to Answersingenesus.org, which this article is from. I had no idea they were so…different.

Obviously, the pastor thinks I’m wrong in my beliefs, and said that “those who wrote the website devote their life to that study and can help you on your journey.”

He also said something about asking me how someone can call themselves a Christian, throwing out the need for a savior found in the book of Genesis?

Sounds like he was inferring people that believe in creation over time or theistic evolution deny God.

That of course is simply not the case.

People of this stripe basically believe the way they interpret the bible is the only way to read it, and so he sees a literal 6 days and would say everyone who holds a different view denies God.

This of course is a hugely false conclusion.

I’m not sure, but he might’ve been talking about what I posted in #4.

He also said “if you throw out creation, you might as well throw out the rest of the Bible because it hinges on creation,” among other things.

Well you could tell him,

“I am not throwing out creation, I believe God created, I am throwing out the idea that The beginning of Genesis is literal science instead of historic epic”

I’m not even going to debate him…I’m not an apologist and I’d get stumped when he says anything.

Actually the Bible never says anywhere that those things didn’t exist at all before the Fall. Just that humans didn’t experience them.

And the foundation of the Gospel message is that mankind sinned and God sent his only Son to save us from our sins. Whether the earth was created over six-days or six-billion years doesn’t affect that at all.

So basically, in a nutshell, this website is wacky?

Bible says clearly and unabigously that earth was created in 6 days and God took rest on the seventh day(based on which we observe every Sunday as holy). There are several instances in OT where day is mentioned, the period of which is undisputedly the present 24 hrs.The stand of all the Bible believers now that the day mentioned in the beginnig of Genesis is not the present day is evidently based on the fact now known(and unknown at the time of writing the OT or till centuries to come) that earth could not have been created in 6 days or man overnight.Nobody now even dare to think that since any thing is possible to God it might have been possible .
Any how my point is that we need not go by word by word in the bible, expecially in OT and argue in favour or against a disputed point.Being lucky enough to know about our lord and saviour Jesus Christ let us pray for his continued grace to fulfill the purpose of our life here.

Nothing is impossible for God. All factual peer-reviewed science in biology, chemistry, anthropology, cosmology, astronomy, physics etc point to the universe and our planet and its life devolping over billions of years. God gave us brains and expects us to use them. I can’t believe that God would have created the earth in 6 days and left all the signs pointing towards a creation that took billions of years. That seems too deceptive to me. My faith in God and belief in his infinite power assures me that he very well could have and did use a long natural process that lasted billions of our years and is still ongoing today to create our magnificent universe and all that exists within it. My belief in this in no way diminishes the infinite power of God.

I don’t know for sure why Genesis lays it out over six days. I’m willing to bet that the author of the creation story was drawing from the style and literature and storytelling of his time to make a point and teach a lesson and to show the awesome power of God to the audience who would hear and read the story. We have to remember that modern science only arose in the last few hundred years. Genesis is a book that existed for many centuries before the modern scientific processes and understanding of those processes arose. If God had inspired the author to explain creation in scientific terms and like a peer-reviewed science paper it would have been entirely incomprehensible to the audience for thousands of years. This would have served no one. So God inspired the author to use a common style of creation story that was common in many cultures and religions and cults of the time so that the audience would fully understand and easily grasp the message God wanted to give us: that he is incredibly powerful and mighty and he is directly responsible for all that exists.

God gave us brains and he expects us to use them. The knowledge of the natural processes that God used and guided to create the universe is knowledge we had to use our brains to discover when we were ready and able to discover said knowledge. I personally find it absolutely amazing that God created the universe in a natural ongoing process that we were able to discover evidence of and by way of our own brains (a gift of God) understand. God left the evidence of his work and methods all over the face of the universe for us to discover and learn about. As someone who loves to learn I can’t thank God enough for this gift.

This is just my take on the matter, and how I would respond to someone who take the creation story literally. I fully respect any differing belief anyone else may have on the matter. I hope I haven’t offended anyone. If I have please forgive me. It wasn’t my intent. Whether a person takes the creation story literally or non literally they come to a similar conclusion: God is mighty and amazing. Rather than argue with a literalist I’d rather rejoice with them that they know the mighty and magnificent God. 🙂 Not everyone is so blessed.😦
