What do we learn in RCIA about Jesus and the rules of the church?
 
What one learns in the classes to prepare for RCIA varies widely. There is no universal curriculum or lesson plan . Some parishes go over the readings and “break open the word” each week, some use a curriculum like ACM that is very strongly tied to the Catechism. Then there is everything in between.
 
Hopefully we learn good spiritual habits and our need for them.

RCIA is rightly called a process rather than merely a program of learning. Learning is a big part of that but incorporation into the body of Christ is the larger mission. You should
come through with a better working knowledge of our faith than many cradle Catholics. Ask questions! God is drawing you and your particular concerns are part of your formation. Find a mentor or sponsor you trust.

You will learn about the history of the Church, the Scriptural basis of the Mass, the Life of Christ, the inspiration of the Saints, explanation of Sacramental grace, what the Church expects you to assent to, service to the poor or needy, about loving your neighbor, about how to navigate the Catechism and the Bible, be introduced to Biblical exegesis, and invited to be a part of the parish community through various methods.

THAT is an AWESOME RCIA program!

The Norm for RCIA is Sept to Easter; about 24 classes; 1-2 hours each for a total of 24-48 hours of instructions; questions and RITES.

I co-taught RCIA for 3 years before I retired. Wish our program could have done all of that.

I’m the Director now. I cram a lot in, PLUS I meet with the candidates outside of class at their convenience. We have wonderful round table discussions, it’s not all lecture.

Your mileage may vary. I attended RCIA at my wife’s parish and it was terrible. I was told falsehoods about Catholicism. It was a bait and switch.
 
What you learn will very widely, depending on both your catechists and yourself. It also will depend in large part on the foundation you already have. Primarily you should learn that RCIA is not a set of classes, but a process that leads to inner conversion and prepares you to encounter Christ in the sacraments.
