I’m tired of having to take care of my roommate’s pet but no matter how many times I’ve spoken to him, he often doesn’t walk him and feed him appropriately. We move out in June. What do I do?

I don’t think it is a big effort to put food out for a pet, but taking him out for a walk is another thing. What would happen if you did not do this? The consequences would be up to your roommate to deal with. And clean up.

He needs to feed his pet. Maybe he assumes you will but this isn’t a “eh maybe later”… the pet needs to be fed

His dog would sit in his kennel (often in urine-feces-soaked bedding) barking all night.

I think I’d threaten to report him if he was neglecting his dog. And if he didn’t step up, I would report him.

Could you contact his family and let them know? Perhaps they may be able to help.

Well then, either you are forced to do it, and he knows by now that he will, or you can point out the wet blanket and complain about the dog barking to him and say you are not caring for his pet.

If you don’t care about having to move immediately or losing his friendship, tell him you will report him to animal welfare if he doesn’t take over care of his pet.

I would also move the kennel to my roommates bedroom and let him listen to his pet all night. No reason you should have to.

This is not right, this should be reported to animal protective services ASAP.

With this I’m going to stop reading this thread because mistreatment of animals makes me very sad

That is very sad to hear. I hope he doesn’t get any more pets in the future. This pet’s problem needs to be addressed and the sooner, the better. If you don’t want the responsibility, you should ask the local animal protection and control what could be done.

Just to let you know recently lost y chihuahua to heart failure. It’s been a rough time for me.

I have adopted three dogs from rescues. There are a lot of people out there who would be willing to give that doggie of your room mate a good home.

This. Especially if this person is going to be living on his own and won’t have anyone there to take care of his pet.
