What do you know about the Spotlight movie?

I just saw the movie with my husband and it shook me to my core. I found myself fighting back tears thinking that the church I was raised in and that I have continued to support could be quilty of such systemic abuse and corruption. I happen to reside in the St. Paul Diocese of Minnesota, so this movie really hit home. Our diocese has been dealing with similar scandal and our Archbishop who was complicit in the whole thing, finally stepped down. It makes me sick to think that this is not an isolated case. I think of all the times that our priests have been moved out of our parishes and can’t help but wonder why? The movie stated that 6% of all Catholic priests are guilty of sexual misconduct and even more startling was that 50% do not remain celibate while in the priesthood. If there was ever an argument for allowing priests to marry, there it is. Maybe then the church could really move forward and rid itself of the sick culture that has plagued it for far too long!

Right and we can get rid of all sin. We just have to be vigilante so this never happens again. The Church is a huge institution. Six per cent of priests have been involved and not all of them had many cases. Some were accused but never found guilty. At least in the Boston area, it was usually one priest but he would have one hundred victims. It was that the priests that did it were great at cover-up and lying. I saw a story on one priest and he still does not believe he did anything wrong. Just a very sick man who was able to gain power.

This is what we saw in the Globe. Names such as Porter and Geoghan and Shaney did so much damage. Day after day and story after story of the same priest and so many cases.

Father Porter left the church and married but still went on to abuse more victims.

In another post on the thread about this movie in Popular Media is a link to a story of a priest who tried to warn people back in the 1950’s and no one listened. The Boston Globe was sent information in the 1990’s and did not investigate. In case there is any confusion, this story broke in 2002, not 2010 or 2011. Sadly in the theatre I went to people applauded at the end of the movie. it was sad to see the columns of cities where sex abuse cases had been reported. There were so many I did not have time to read them all. They were cities around the world.

The real sadness was that during the 60’s and 70’s some priests came forth and addressed what they saw to the diocese. Also many families at least in the Father Porter cases came forth and approach the Church in the local area as many knew the pastor. I believe the pastor brought his concerns to the diocese.These families(fathers) tried and that is one of the real tragedies that the hierarchy of the Church thought it could just brush it away, that this was an isolated incident. Many of these families have since left the church.

Also if the Glove was sent information in 1990’s that was about the time the Father Porter story came out locally as how he had molested so many. This was a major local story, but this was a different diocese. This was the Fall River Diocese not the Boston Diocese. How much they knew about the Boston priests I do not know but stories were in the local papers about a few of them just not the vast numbers.

That was one thing I give the movie makers and indeed the Globe credit for. The Globe admitted to their own culpability in the cases in that they had been given many of the pieces they later put together far earlier than 2001-2002 and indeed could have shed light on the story far sooner, but they also dropped the proverbial ball.
