If a protestant says they don’t believe in sola scriptura, because they have God as their other authority?
Obviously there isn’t much you CAN say to this.If a protestant says they don’t believe in sola scriptura, because they have God as their other authority?
It sounds like they believe they are having conversations with God which would indicate a much greater psychological problem. It could also be an indicator of pride if they refuse the need of a Church or the Bible and only rely on their own beliefs. If a protestant says they don’t believe in sola scriptura, because they have God as their other authority?
I would hesitate to accuse anyone of having psychological problems because they believe they are guided by, or have been spoken to by God. Otherwise we’d have to question many historical figures as well…Like Moses…It sounds like they believe they are having conversations with God which would indicate a much greater psychological problem. If this man has been convinced that he does not need to follow the church or the Bible specifically because of a supposed conversation with God, this implies either it was God, psychological problems, or conversations with a demon posing as God. I would prefer to believe that God has not been teaching this man a heresy so I’m going to assume that this is psychological.I would hesitate to accuse anyone of having psychological problems because they believe they are guided by, or have been spoken to by God. Besides, god has spoken to me at least twice in my life, once clearly and (internally) audibly and the other time with a most clear sign. Of course most of the time he guides me much more subtly.
The better indicator if a person is being guided by God or by some other spirit,is by what they are being told to believe and/or do.
This is why we have the Church as well as the Scriptures. So that we can “test the spirits”.

Fair enough…If this man has been convinced that he does not need to follow the church or the Bible specifically because of a supposed conversation with God, this implies either it was God, psychological problems, or conversations with a demon posing as God. This is good. Also, you can show him in the bible where it says how we should settle disputes. The bible is the best tool when speaking to people who see the authority of the bible, but not the church.Obviously there isn’t much you CAN say to this.
You can ask them how they know it is God and not the evil one.
The best counter discussion to this is probably to ask if God can teach multiple truths. If they say, as they should, no - then ask what is to be done when two sincere Christians, both relying on the Bible and on God, come to differing Truths. How do they resolve the matter?
