What do you say to those who think Catholics going to hell?

I heard someone say on a radio talk show today that Catholicism is not a Bible-based religion and that Catholics are going to hell. It made me very angry. The man said this in regard to the nomination of a sixth Catholic to the U.S. Supreme Court. He said there are already five Catholics on the court and that is why America is going to fail. What do we say to people who believe this?

In the case of the talk show, laugh and change the channel. Such shows thrive on sensationalism and are unlikely to be open to reasoned dialogue. If you feel the need to do more though, you could write to the station and its advertisers, expressing your disappointment with the anti-Catholic bigotry promoted by this show.

As for someone who tells you personally that Catholics are going to hell because Catholicism is not a Bible-based religion, it depends on the circumstances and whether or not the person seems open to discussion. If not, just say coolly, “How kind of you to say so,” and walk away.
