I should have watched the rest. The commentor stated to effect that God did not give him the same oportunity as Thomas ( the doubting apostle) so therefore he will not believe in God. So i basically quit paying attention after that comment.

Nobody would choose to go to hell.

A loving God would not leave souls in hell forever.

If one willing does that which they know is contary to God’s will they are choosing not to be with God. One knows of God and chooses not to believe in God they choose not to be with God and the only place to be is in hell.

A loving God would not be at all loving if He made one stay in His presence if that one did not want to be there.
OK, I don’t understand your logic here. So you are saying that deep down all atheists actually know that God exists but choose not to believe? That is not true and doesn’t really make any sense. Also, if God does exist and an atheist was given the choice to spend eternity with Him or to spend eternity in hell, you think they would choose hell?

If everyone knew that God existed then there would be no atheists. So “one knows of God and chooses not to believe in God” doesn’t make sense. Athiests know of the concept of God, but they also know in the concept of zeus, oden, unicorns, and santa clause.

From what I understand, this is very close to the Orthodox view of Hell. In their view (mind, this is only my understanding of their position. To our Orthodox brethren: Feel free to correct me on this) Heaven is where God’s Love and Presence are warm and comforting. What we call Purgatory is God’s Love and Presence burning the remnant stain of what we call temporal punishment and venial sin from us. Hell is how those souls who, by their actions or belief in this life, experience the Fire of God’s Love and His Presence.

For myself, I like how this handles the apparent contradiction of God’s omnipresence and the state of Hell. Hell isn’t somewhere that He created and then plunks those who disobey Him into (tangent thought - Hell is the Australia of the afterlife?), Hell is how those souls who rejected God experience His Divine Love in His Presence.

Tangent for fellow Catholic posters: Is this a safe theological position for me to hold and still claim full communion with the Pope?

I am not saying all know of God.
Do you know of God? Obviously cause you have been on this site for a long time. Why do you not believe then? Do you feel you can not choose to believe?

I think the video base much on the differences between the Atheist point of view, and the Christian point of view. Allow me to present the difference:

"Picture 3 things: a boat, an ocean, and people. To an atheist, they sees it that the people are on the boat, to them, hell is as if the captain just takes the people and throw them down the sea. But to Christians, the people are drowning, and hell is simply the people’s refusal to accept the captain’s help and enter the ship.

With this perspective in mind, it would be easier for one to reach an atheist. Remind them that it’s not God who tortures people. But hell rather is a reality where there is no God. It shows how reality would be without the presence of God.

I know of God and I did believe in god up until a few months ago. I wish that I did believe in God but it just doesn’t seem like a logical step to make. The evidence is lacking.

You can’t just choose to believe something.

For your analogy to actually work you would have to change a few things. First of all you have heard of a captain and you have been told that a captain exists but you have never seen or talked to the captain yourself and neither has anyone that has told you about him. Some of them say they can feel the captain with them but none of them have actually seen the captain. Also, some people will tell you of one captain, some will tell you of another, and some yet another captain, and each group says that if you try to be saved by the wrong captain he will not save you.

So you are left with the possibility of a captain that may or may not exist and you have to gamble on which possibly fictitious captain to ask for help.

As many can/will attest, they find that the evidence shows there is God.

And you too have heard of this “captian”.
Catholic teaching tells us that the captian knows who is who thus; not knowing of this captian becomes a non issue.
It is true the false captians can not save one, but the saving captian knows who is who already.

Do you think people choose to believe things? It seems to me that people will believe things, whether for good reasons or bad ones. If there was a choice, it seems there wouldn’t be belief, or that the belief would be a forced one.
Yes, absolutely. That is the very defintion of faith.

People choose to believe all sorts of things all the time and often on scant evidence or the most questionable “Facts”. UFO’s, aiiens, bigfoot, that their team will win the world series, that it’s not really the body and blood of Jesus…

All chosen. No-one is holding a gun to anyone’s head.

I didn’t watch the video. I like this one about Hell… vh1.com/video/squirrel-nut-zippers/10096/hell.jhtml#artist=569

lol, I like what you did here. You lump not believing that the host and wine are really the body and blood of Jesus with UFO’s, aliens, and bigfoot…you should have left “not” out of it to be honest. I have tasted blood and I have tasted wine and I can assure you that what is served at church is not blood.

I find this to be an OK definition of belief:

“Belief is the psychological state in which an individual holds a proposition or premise to be true.”

It seems to me, that a lot of things would influence ones belief of something. Things such as evidence. How could one choose to believe something then? Ignoring evidence to the contrary? Claiming that said evidence does not come from a reliable source? Ignoring the very premise of evidence, and saying that evidence doesn’t enter into it?

And what about these points?

Another question: How would an atheist (not using the definition “believes there is no god” now) know which is the right one? They might know of several, mutually exclusive gods, might they not?
