What do you think of games with demonic elements?

I wonder if there is a Japanese anime or game which uses visuals of Emperor Hirohito, Shinto or the Yasukuni Shrine and so forth and associate them with something negative. I bet there isn’t. An anime which deals with Japanese WW2 military human rights abuses?

It’s too easy to just blame something like the Catholic Church. Yet the Church runs the best schools in Japan and everyone especially non Catholics want to get into those schools because they produce good results.

Maybe Square should stick to what they know best and if it comes to any depiction of totalitarianism and tyranny stick to their country’s own history. It’s not like we ever considered our Pope a god or on par with God. Our Pope never had the power to decide life or death. Or maybe their fans would drag them out of their offices if they did that… who knows. 🙂

It’s similar to CAVE, which has a brilliant shooter game called DEATH SMILES. Xbox and iOS versions exist. In the game you fly around destroying demons. The visuals of the final stage are the inside of the Sistine Chapel.
Considering what I know about Shinto, depicting the emperor poorly is asking for trouble. To the Shinto he is descendant of the son God, even if he no longer claims personal divinity.

Do the Shintos still believe that? I thought Hirohito made a speech in the 40s that he wasn’t divine at all, following the request of Douglas MacArthur.

It’s debatable. The Japanese folks I know vary from still believing that or something like that to being very respectful (more respectful than we are towards our own heads-of-state or the British are toward their queen) but not wishing to discuss the emperor. Of course that could just be the small number of people I know, although they’re diverse.

Oh, okay. Very interesting.

He has said that, but it is still tradition he is decendant from the sun god, even if he isn’t divine.

I agree wholeheartedly, especially with the whole not playing as a demonic character, that’s why I never use devil characters whenever I play Tekken, and I don’t allow my baby cousin to play as them, either. I prefer the angelic characters like Jun or Angel. They’re overpowered and they fight for God 🙂
well, to play as them in a fighting videogame i doubt it is sinful or anything, unless the person playing as them would like to emulate them, otherwise i think it is just another moveset, nonetheless usually those 3d fighting games are full of fanservice wich I found more dangerous (never really played tekken, but as far as others like Soul calibur it does have).

I see. I wonder why some people still follow that tradition, though. It seems disrespectful toward their gods in my eyes.

I doubt it’s sinful as well, but the backstory of the demonic characters just makes me keep away from them. Maybe I’m scrupulous, but it just makes me a tad uncomfortable to play as a character that sold his sold to a demon. 🤷
And if by ‘fanservice’ you mean how some of the characters are dressed inappropriately to look like eye candy, I agree that could be an occasion of sin to some. But being a girl, it doesn’t really affect me personally how skimpily a girl in the game is dressed. 😛

I do remember alot of people telling us that D&D was to be avoided and satanic in nature, but I have played it a couple times with a good friend who was really into it, I found it was boring and too drawn out for me. but it also did not recognize God as the creator and includes fairy tale type creatures, magic being used, etc, so I guess it does have some satanic themes.
“Fairy-tale type creatures” are Satanic? I don’t think that fantasy magic is Satanic either, but I can see a bit more rationale for that one.

I actually don’t like the “feel” of most invented fantasy worlds, especially those invented for game purposes. I’m not sure I’d call them Satanic, but they don’t seem to reflect a wholesome moral imagination in many cases.

Perhaps you should learn more about how Shinto people think about the gods instead of projecting your stereotypes on them?

I wasn’t trying to ‘project’ any stereotypes on the Shinto people, I was merely voicing my thoughts. I realize that they believe that humans can become divine (as in, they become the Kami that they worship) by living a good Shinto in life, and that traditionally the emperor is thought to be a descendant of their sun goddess. I was just wondering why some would still believe in that tradition if one of their emperors has already, not even 100 years ago, said he wasn’t divine at all.
Maybe the way I’m wording things doesn’t make sense to you, but I wasn’t trying to be rude or mean toward the Shinto in my earlier post. I have studied their religion and I think it’s very interesting.
