What does being consecrated to Jesus through Mary mean? Why not just be consecrated to Jesus? I’m reading 33 Days to Morning Glory and it says that we should give ourselves completely to Mary (when consecrating onseslf to Her). Is this okay with Jesus? Shouldn’t we give ourselves entirely to Him? I know I probably sound like a Protestant, but I am not. I say my Hail Marys and I pray the Rosary. i just don’t understand and am not really informed on Marian consecration. I feel almost guilty, as if I’m putting Jesus to the side or in second place, rather than the center of my life.

I see it like this now stick with me here…:). Mary as the Mother of God/Jesus is our Mother, and we share in the Sonship of Jesus who reconciles the whole world to Him. Think of the Hail Mary prayer… Jesus is the fruit of her womb, and so are we as children of Mary… We are the body of Christ, Mary is the neck and Jesus the head…

Mary and ‘we’ are protected by God as Mary is the Ark of the new and eternal covenant, the covenant made with the blood of the Lamb who came from Mary’s womb… Now womb in Scriptures is a special Holy place known by God and we are created there…

…Jeremiah 1:5 “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you,
and before you were born I consecrated you;
I appointed you a prophet to the nations.”

…Revelation 11: 19 Then God’s temple in heaven was opened, and within his temple was seen the ark of his covenant. And there came flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of thunder, an earthquake and a severe hailstorm.

That last scripture talks of the coming of the Lord through an ark (Mary).

. So picture Mary the boat (who’s womb is Holy=the inner sanctuary) which carries us to the Father in heaven with Jesus who is the driver in the boat… Were it not for being in the sanctuary of the boat we wouldn’t be on that ship to heaven… In other words, we’re one united family because of our Baptism, and it would not be a true family if we didn’t have Our Spiritual Mother who is Mary… So we are made wholly with God the Father with everyone on board…:)…So we are consecrated to Jesus through Mary, the Mother of Our Lord…🙂 Read Revelation 12:17 to see how we are the offspring of Mary who has in her womb a place prepared by God for us to be carried to our eternal home by an ark as prophesied in the Days of Noah…

Consecrations are a dedication or entrustment set aside for a purpose. They are basically part of private revelation because one is already consecrated to God by virtue of baptism. We renew those vows usually at Easter.

One can be consecrated to the Sacred heart,Eucharistic Heart Immaculate heart, but they all mean virtually the same thing. I think consecration to the Immaculate Heart is supposed to join you to the Sacred Heart. It is a tad complicated for me to understand but it is not part of public revelation which has been closed since the death of the last apostle.

I don’t think we even have to get into anything complicated.

Remember the wedding at Cana? Somehow, with all the people at the wedding, the servants there ended up looking to one of the random friends and relatives, Mary, for a solution to the wine problem. And they were right to do so, because she got it taken care of.

How did she get it taken care of? By going to her Son.

What did she tell the servants? She pointed to her son and said, “Do whatever he tells you.”

So yeah, of course there is nothing wrong with consecrating yourself to Jesus, or to His Sacred Heart, or using any of the other Jesus-only devotions, just like there would be nothing wrong with consecrating yourself to the Father or to the Holy Spirit.

But a lot of people like bringing the Holy Family into it, so they prefer consecrating themselves to Jesus through Mary. It’s just as direct, plus you get to hang out with Mary.

None of the saints in Heaven have a will that goes against God’s will. They are part of the Body of Christ in a fuller way than we are, here on Earth. Christ involves them in His plans as much as His fingers and other body parts were involved in doing miracles down on Earth. The beautiful difference is that the mystical Body includes people’s whole selves, instead of our own bodies including a bunch of microorganisms and structures we can’t talk to.

Yes,but you must also remember that we are consecrated to God by virtue of our baptism.
I think Mary just helps us to better understand that. “Do whatever He tells you”

Remember the story in the first part of the book about the peasants giving food to the king. They give it to the Queen and she arranges it beautifully on a golden plate and makes it attractive for the King. Same thing with Mary - we give ourselves to her and she makes us beautiful before giving us to Jesus.

Mary cannot do anything except what is the will of God and neither can she violate our own free will.
I see consecration to Jesus through Mary as a pious devotion aimed at joining ones heart to the Sacred Heart because Mary is already joined ,just as it shows the two hearts on the miraculous medal.
That is my take anyway.
Mary s not like goddess Kali of Hinduism who forces people to do her will by physically influencing them.Mary is a loving and gentle mother who always points to Jesus.

Good points, Karen!

Mary’s womb is the bosom of the elect. All the elect are spiritually born of Mary, and are fashioned by her Spouse, the Holy Spirit.

[24] I am the mother of fair love, and of fear, and of knowledge, and of holy hope. [25] In me is all grace of the way and of the truth, in me is all hope of life and of virtue.

[26] Come over to me, all ye that desire me, and be filled with my fruits. [27] For my spirit is sweet above honey, and my inheritance above honey and the honeycomb. [28] My memory is unto everlasting generations. [29] They that eat me, shall yet hunger: and they that drink me, shall yet thirst. [30] He that hearkeneth to me, shall not be confounded: and they that work by me, shall not sin.

Yes, this is okay with Jesus and you don’t have to feel guilty that you are in some way putting Jesus to the side or second place, but rather following his example. In the divine plan of the salvation, the redemption and restoration of the human race, the eternal Son of God who is one God with the Father and the Holy Spirit, the omnipotent God, took flesh by the power of the Holy Spirit in the immaculate womb of Mary and thus Mary is the mother of Jesus, the Mother of God. The eternal Son of God was born of the Blessed Virgin Mary, not as an adult, but as an infant Mary held in her arms, totally dependent on Mary (and St Joseph, the foster-father of Jesus) as all children born into this world are totally dependent on their parents in their upbringing. The eternal Son of God gave himself completely to the Blessed Virgin Mary as a helpless infant and babe, dependent on his mother for everything. It was in this way that the divine plan of the salvation of the human race effected by the incarnation of Jesus Christ began.

On the cross, Jesus gave his mother Mary to be our mother. As the Church teaches, Mary is our mother in the order of divine grace. She is the mother of the Church and of all the members of the mystical body of Christ who is the head of the Church. Mary is the new Eve, the Mother of all the living. A mother does not produce a head without the other members of the body or we would have a monster of nature. In accord with the will of God and in cooperation with the Holy Spirit, our Blessed Mother participates in the generation and formation of the faithful "Jesus is Mary’s only son, but her spiritual motherhood extends to all men whom indeed he came to save: “The Son whom she brought forth is he whom God placed as the first-born among many brethren, that is, the faithful in whose generation and formation she co-operates with a mother’s love.” (CCC#501).

Mary is our mother and we are her children, little children. Jesus said “Amen, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.” (Matt. 18:3). We are totally dependent on God our Father for everything as little children are dependent on their parents for everything. God has given us Mary to be our spiritual mother and so whether we realize or are conscious of it or not, by God’s will and plan we are dependent on Mary in the work of our salvation who cooperates with Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit and God the Father in this work of our salvation and the supernatural life of grace which is eternal life begun here on earth. The maternal role that Mary plays in our lives is subordinate to that of God of course who is the beginning and end of all things, but her role and mediation is a real and true mediation as she is not a robot but a human being with intelligence and free will. Mary’s will however, is wholly united to God’s will so that she does nothing but what is in conformity to the will of God.

So, we consecrate or give ourselves over completely to Jesus, our last end, through Mary because it is God’s will that as children of Mary we are completely dependent on her (and ultimately to God our Father as Mary herself is) who is our mother in the order of divine grace just as children in this world are totally dependent on their parents for everything (in this connection, confer the spiritual doctrine of spiritual childhood of St Therese of Lisieux). This motherhood of Mary over our souls is the role that God has given to her which she lovingly accepted and embraces. In her free assent to the incarnation of the Son of God at the Annuciation from the angel Gabriel and in union with her divine son in the divine plan of the redemption of the human race her whole life long, Mary has given herself completely to us as Jesus himself did for our salvation. Mary leads us to Jesus, to God, our last end and ultimate beatitude. In going to Jesus through Mary is to tread the same path that Jesus took in coming to us. It is an immaculate, all holy, and perfect path. To give ourselves totally and completely over to the Blessed Virgin Mary and depend on her for everything as Jesus did in his incarnation, birth, infancy, and childhood, we will surely find Jesus living in Mary.

Solid answer! St. Louis de Montfort would be proud 🙂

I also wanted to add something. One day, Our Lady left a book on Ven. Marthe Robin’s bed (she was bedridden for decades). Mary said that she wanted this book to be spread across the globe. And that book was…

’True Devotion to Mary’ by St. Louis de Montfort - a book that, according to his prophecy, will contribute towards forming the greatest Marian Saints the Church has ever seen!

But what about our baptisms then? Is that not supposed to sanctify us and set us apart for God’s service?
Of course it does, and part of the Consecration includes renewal of our Baptismal vows.
Mary cannot do anything except what is the will of God and neither can she violate our own free will.
And nor would she try to.
I see consecration to Jesus through Mary as a pious devotion aimed at joining ones heart to the Sacred Heart because Mary is already joined ,just as it shows the two hearts on the miraculous medal.
So do I. I don’t see any contradiction, here.
Mary is not like goddess Kali of Hinduism who forces people to do her will by physically influencing them.Mary is a loving and gentle mother who always points to Jesus.
I’m not sure what I said that made you think I was suggesting that at all.

This is the wording of DeMontfort’s “total consecration”. Frankly, I find it rather alarming.
O Eternal and incarnate Wisdom! O sweetest and most adorable Jesus! True God and true man, only Son of the Eternal Father, and of Mary, always virgin! I adore Thee profoundly in the bosom and splendors of Thy Father during eternity; and I adore Thee also in the virginal bosom of Mary, Thy most worthy Mother, in the time of Thine incarnation.
I give Thee thanks for that Thou hast annihilated Thyself, taking the form of a slave in order to rescue me from the cruel slavery of the devil. I praise and glorify Thee for that Thou hast been pleased to submit Thyself to Mary, Thy holy Mother, in all things, in order to make me Thy faithful slave through her. But, alas! Ungrateful and faithless as I have been, I have not kept the promises which I made so solemnly to Thee in my Baptism; I have not fulfilled my obligations; I do not deserve to be called Thy child, nor yet Thy slave; and as there is nothing in me which does not merit Thine anger and Thy repulse, I dare not come by myself before Thy most holy and august Majesty. It is on this account that I have recourse to the intercession of Thy most holy Mother, whom Thou hast given me for a mediatrix with Thee. It is through her that I hope to obtain of Thee contrition, the pardon of my sins, and the acquisition and preservation of wisdom.
Hail, then, O immaculate Mary, living tabernacle of the Divinity, where the Eternal Wisdom willed to be hidden and to be adored by angels and by men! Hail, O Queen of Heaven and earth, to whose empire everything is subject which is under God. Hail, O sure refuge of sinners, whose mercy fails no one. Hear the desires which I have of the Divine Wisdom; and for that end receive the vows and offerings which in my lowliness I present to thee.
I, N_____, a faithless sinner, renew and ratify today in thy hands the vows of my Baptism; I renounce forever Satan, his pomps and works; and I give myself entirely to Jesus Christ, the Incarnate Wisdom, to carry my cross after Him all the days of my life, and to be more faithful to Him than I have ever been before. In the presence of all the heavenly court I choose thee this day for my Mother and Mistress. I deliver and consecrate to thee, as thy slave, my body and soul, my goods, both interior and exterior, and even the value of all my good actions, past, present and future; leaving to thee the entire and full right of disposing of me, and all that belongs to me, without exception, according to thy good pleasure, for the greater glory of God in time and in eternity.
Receive, O benignant Virgin, this little offering of my slavery, in honor of, and in union with, that subjection which the Eternal Wisdom deigned to have to thy maternity; in homage to the power which both of you have over this poor sinner, and in thanksgiving for the privileges with which the Holy Trinity has favored thee. I declare that I wish henceforth, as thy true slave, to seek thy honor and to obey thee in all things.
O admirable Mother, present me to thy dear Son as His eternal slave, so that as He has redeemed me by thee, by thee He may receive me! O Mother of mercy, grant me the grace to obtain the true Wisdom of God; and for that end receive me among those whom thou lovest and teachest, whom thou leadest, nourishest and protectest as thy children and thy slaves.
O faithful Virgin, make me in all things so perfect a disciple, imitator and slave of the Incarnate Wisdom, Jesus Christ thy Son, that I may attain, by thine intercession and by thine example, to the fullness of His age on earth and of His glory in Heaven. Amen.

Alarming?
Keep calm and love the Immaculata.

The Three Ages of the Interior Life | Reginald Garrigou-Lagrange, OP | Ch 6: The Influence of Mary Mediatrix
christianperfection.info/tta16.php

When the bases of the interior life are considered, we cannot discuss the action of Christ, the universal Mediator, on His mystical body without also speaking of the influence of Mary Mediatrix. As we remarked, many persons delude themselves, maintaining that they reach union with God without having continual recourse to our Lord, who is the way, the truth, and the life. Another error would consist in wishing to go to our Lord without going first to Mary, whom the Church calls in a special feast the Mediatrix of all graces. Protestants have fallen into this last error. Without going as far as this deviation, there are Catholics who do not see clearly enough the necessity of having recourse to Mary that they may attain to intimacy with the Savior. Blessed Grignion de Montfort speaks even of “doctors who know the Mother of God only in a speculative, dry, sterile, and indifferent manner; who fear that devotion to the Blessed Virgin is abused, and that injury is done to our Lord by honoring too greatly His holy Mother. If they speak of devotion to Mary, it is less to recommend it than to destroy the abuses that have grown up around it.” They seem to believe that Mary is a hindrance to reaching divine union. According to Blessed Grignion, we lack humility if we neglect the mediators whom God has given us because of our frailty. Intimacy with our Lord in prayer will be greatly facilitated by a true and profound devotion to Mary.

The Three Ages of the Interior Life | Reginald Garrigou-Lagrange, OP | Ch 40 : The Spiritual Age of the Perfect, Their Union with God
christianperfection.info/tta91.php

Good Christians consecrate themselves to the Blessed Virgin that she may lead them to our Lord, and to the Sacred Heart that Jesus may lead them to His Father.

The Three Ages of the Interior Life | Reginald Garrigou-Lagrange, OP | Ch 22 : Docility to the Holy Ghost
christianperfection.info/tta71.php

Consequently the Christian who has consecrated himself to Mary Mediatrix, for example, according to the formula of St. Grignion de Montfort, and then to the Sacred Heart, will find treasures in the often renewed consecration to the Holy Ghost. All Mary’s influence leads us to the intimacy of Christ, and the humanity of the Savior leads us to the Holy Ghost, who introduces us into the mystery of the adorable Trinity. We may fittingly make this consecration at Pentecost and renew it frequently.

The Mystical City of God
By Venerable Mary of Jesus of Agreda
Chapter IV
Christ Our Savior Is Born Of The Virgin Mary In Bethlehem, Juda.
stjames-church.com/book4c4.html

“Mother, become like unto Me, since on this day, for the human existence, which thou hast today given Me, I will give thee another more exalted existence in grace, assimilating thy existence as a mere creature to the likeness of Me, who am God and Man.”

Have a joyful Advent and Christmastide.

It looks melodramatic because that was the Montfort style, but that is probably beside the point. Those of us that don’t find that our style have to scratch our heads about another way to act out our baptism. Here acting out baptism caused mob rule, bullying etc. Far better to hide right away all on your own!

The way I look at it, the saints are God’s best mates, and where they are, a lot of Him rubs off on us and vice versa. They take us seriously and they represent our concerns in genuineness to Him. He’s so big but He’s only - what, 36" or 40" round the waist - so His mates are part of what shows us Him.

How at all that connects to actually living one’s life is completely another puzzle.

Peter26, you could probably cut two-thirds of that out. Just pick a few core statements.

An Act of Consecration for the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C.

Most Holy Trinity, Our Father in Heaven, who chose Mary as the fairest of your daughters; Holy Spirit, who chose Mary as your spouse; God the Son, who chose Mary as your Mother; in union with Mary, we adore your majesty and acknowledge your supreme, eternal dominion and authority.

Most Holy Trinity, we put the United States of America into the hands of Mary Immaculate in order that she may present the country to you. Through her we wish to thank you for the great resources of this land and for the freedom which has been its heritage. Through the intercession of Mary, have mercy on the Catholic Church in America. Grant us peace. Have mercy on our President and on all the officers of our government. Grant us a fruitful economy born of justice and charity. Have mercy on capital and industry and labor. Protect the family life of the nation. Guard the precious gift of many religious vocations. Through the intercession of our mother, have mercy on the sick, the poor, the tempted, sinners–on all who are in need.

Mary, Immaculate Virgin, our mother, patroness of our land, we praise you and honor you and give our country and ourselves to your sorrowful and immaculate heart. O Sorrowful and immaculate heart of Mary, pierced by the sword of sorrow prophesied by Simeon, save us from degeneration, disaster and war. Protect us from all harm. O sorrowful and immaculate heart of Mary, you who bore the sufferings of your son in the depths of your heart, be our advocate. Pray for us, that acting always according to your will and the will of your divine son, we may live and die pleasing to God. Amen.

I think it is common especially for those who make the consecration to have spiritual attacks of discouragement from the devil. I won’t go into that but it is wise to be aware that one is a particular target for those who have recourse to Blessed Mary Ever-Virgin, Mother of God. Though Mary is much more powerful than any of us is liable to suspect.

Devotion is a readiness of our will to do the will of God. Mary’s will is always perfectly ready to do God’s will. Our love of Christ, following the example of Mary, must be real. This means it must be lived in obedience to His teaching and in the observance of His commands.
The ‘true’ devotion is only as true as it is like Mary’s devotion to her Son. She is not in competition with her Son. It is the gift of oneself to her Son but ‘through’ her, following her example and through the grace that she obtains from Him for us to do His will. There’s no true imitation of Christ without the imitation of Mary.
It means especially the imitation of her virtues, and among these especially her unshaken faith, her absolute confidence in God, virtuous sincerity and her utterly selfless charity toward others.
Mary never had any guilt on her soul. Mary never lost any grace. We should imitate her by not sinning.
The true devotion is devotion ‘through Mary’ to Christ. It is devotion ‘like Mary’ to Christ. It is devotion ‘with Mary’ to Christ. It is devotion ‘in the company of Mary’ toward Christ. It is devotion that is ‘modeled on Mary’s devotion’ to Christ.
She best knows what Jesus wants. She better than anyone else understands the mind and will of Jesus.

I grappled with questions like:

Why surrender our entire self as slaves or property of Mary when our devotion is really directed to Jesus?

I desire not to please myself or be consecrated to myself.
Becoming a slave of Mary is understood as an expression of one’s total consecration to Mary’s Son with total dedicated love. When a person with a free will gives themselves totally to Our Lady, it means complete giving of oneself and giving up everything for one’s lifetime. Giving up one’s time, one’s convenience, one’s preference. Giving all that God would demand of us. I must keep giving myself to God.
The will of the Son is the will of His mother. We obtain from her the habitual attitude of complete dependence on her in our whole life and in everything that we think and do.
Mary I leave it up to you. Mary I love you.
Jesus entrusted Himself to her motherly care. And He could trust His mother. So can we.

Do I praise Our Lady so much that I place her almost on the same level with Christ?

She won’t allow this even if it seems so. We should not only believe, but understand what we believe. Our Lady wants to make it clear that she is only the channel, the bridge to her Son. I’m simply following Christ after the example of Mary, as inspired by Mary and made possible by the graces she receives through the intercession of her Divine Son.
Jesus, the Son of Mary, is the Son of the Living God. Jesus is God.

Am I pleasing to God if don’t make the consecration to Mary?

The consecration that historically is brought into the Church by St. Louis de Montfort actually began on Calvary.
She being our mother, we may be sure that even though we do not make the consecration, Mary knows her motherly responsibility. It is not that we are instructing her and enlightening her on what she should do. It is rather to remind ourselves what we ought to do. This is a way in which the Church has approved and for those who have the grace. And it is not the only devotion to Our Lady that the Church recognizes.

Perhaps this will help clarify some questions about Marian Total Consecration or True Devotion:
The MOST Theological Collection: Vatican II: Marian Council “Chapter 18 - Consecration to Mary”

My Mother
Holy Mary, my Queen, I recommend myself to your blessed protection and special keeping, and to the bosom of your mercy, today and every day and at the hour of my death. My soul and my body I recommend to you. I entrust to you my hope and consolation, my distress and my misery, my life and its termination. Through your most holy intercession and through your merits may all my actions be directed according to your will and that of your Son. Amen.
~Saint Aloysius

And who was the first to entrust and consecrate himself entirely to Mary, in perfect obedience to her? Was it the great Saint Louis de Montfort? No - it was Jesus Himself, at the Incarnation. And the whole Trinity with Him.

And who was the first to entrust and consecrate himself entirely to Mary, in perfect obedience to her? Was it the great Saint Louis de Montfort? No - it was Jesus Himself, at the Incarnation. And the whole Trinity with Him.
Since consecration to Mary consists of the entire gift of self to Jesus through Mary, why would Jesus entrust Himself to Himself?
  1. Give oneself entirely
  2. To Jesus
  3. Through Mary
Seems to me Mary entrusted herself to Him at the Annunciation.
In making the act of consecration, a person gives oneself to Mary and through her to Jesus as her slave.
Jesus set a perfect example of obedience to Mary, but had no need of consecration.
Let’s make sure we understand the consecration is the carrying out of Christ’s command to Saint John, “Behold, your mother.”
Christ has gifted the Church the Immaculate Mother of Jesus at the foot of the Cross.
If your point is that Saint Louis de Montfort is not the only method of true devotion, I would agree.
…In him whom you are here to honour, each one of you sees the guide who leads you to Mary and from Mary to Jesus. All the Saints, no doubt, were the great servants of Mary, all of them led souls to Her; Montfort is, without contest, one of those who has laboured most ardently and most efficaciously in making Her known and served…
…But the devotion in question must moreover be a sincere and loyal one. The Author of the Treatise of the True Devotion to Our Blessed Lady makes a clear-cut distinction between this true devotion and that other one based more or less upon superstition, whose devotees put forward a few exterior practices and superficial sentiments as their authority for living as they please and remaining in sin, counting on a miraculous grace of conversion at the final hour.
True devotion, traditional devotion, that of the Church, that shall we say of Christian and Catholic commonsense must essentially lead to a closer union with Jesus, under the guidance of Mary. The precise form and practice of this devotion can vary according to time, place and personal inclination. Within the limits of sound and safe doctrine, of what is orthodox and becoming, the Church leaves to her children a just measure of freedom, for she is aware that true and perfect devotion to our Blessed Lady is not so intimately tied up with these various forms, that any one of them can claim to hold a monopoly.
~Pope Pius XII 1947 homily after the ceremony of canonization for St. Louis de Montfort
As a member of the Militia of the Immaculata I used Saint Maximilian Kolbe’s method of consecration.
If you or anyone you know are interested, the English translation of Kolbe’s writings just became available here:
