It stands for:

Iesus
Nazarenus
Rex
Iudeorum

Which stands for “Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews.” When the Romans crucified Jesus thy hung up a sign that said this phrase in three languages, Greek, Latin and Hebrew.

God bless :byzsoc:

Yes, to CAF posts that answer the question.

At any rate: google.com/search?q=INRI
I should have said “in general.” Many times I pose a question (not the I.N.R.I. one) and the only results come back as the same question unanswered. Just saying I don’t depend on Google for everything and I don’t think the OP was out of line by asking the question here. I am disappointed that some chose to treat the subject matter as a joke.

I thought it was “Initiate Nail Removal Immediately.” 😉

I read that joke a long time before I became Catholic and learned the real meaning, but it still pops into my head every time I see it.

My cousins on Long Island used to go to JFK High School… Jail for Kids

This reminds me of the skit on Second City TV a long time ago, where they were making fun of Jim and Tammy Fae Baker I think. They all had yellowish suits on and hats that looked like chunks of swiss cheese, and were preaching how you had to worship cheeses and pray to the Lord cheeses and such stuff.

From James Martin’s great blog post on the spirituality of humor…

***On the last day of the retreat, there was a big celebratory dinner, and everyone was supposed to speak about their retreat. When I looked around I realized that the other few men, the priests and brothers, on retreat had left. So when I stood up I looked around and it was just me and about 50 African sisters. I felt a little strange and was worried that I would say the wrong thing. So I blurted out, “I guess I’m the only man here.” And from across the room an African sister called out, “And blessed are you among women!” ***

Also ΙΝΒΙ is Greek for INRI: Ἰησοῦς ὁ Ναζωραῖος ὁ Bασιλεὺς τῶν Ἰουδαίων (Iesous ho Nazoraios ho Basileus ton Ioudaion).

ІНЦІ is Slavonic: Ісус Назорей Цар Іудейський (Isus Nazorei Tsar Iudeiskii).
Polish: Jezus Nazarejczyk Król Żydowski

(Some take this as very offensive, btw.)

So I recieved an infraction for my joke about what INRI means. Deservedly so, yes.

At first pride kicks in… those blankety blank moderators, can’t anyone take a joke, I’ll bet Jesus had a sense of humor, and so forth. I actually went to bed but the thought of the examination of concience I use before confession came to my mind. I got out of bed, booted the laptop and looked at my bulleted list

THE FIRST COMMANDMENT: “I, the Lord, am your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, that place of slavery. You shall not have other gods besides me.”
  • Have I committed the sin of sacrilege such as profanation of a sacred person, place or thing?
THE SECOND COMMANDMENT: “You shall not take the name of the Lord, your God, in vain.”
  • Did I take the name of God in vain? Did I make use of God’s name mockingly, jokingly, angrily, or in any other irreverent manner?
THE FIFTH COMMANDMENT: “You shall not kill.”
  • Was I an occasion of sin for others by way of conversation; the telling of jokes which are
religiously, racially or sexually offensive; dressing; inviting somebody to attend certain shows; lending of harmful books or magazines; helping someone to steal, etc? Did I try to repair the scandal done? How many persons did I lead to sin? What sins were involved?
There it is, right in front of me. If I use this list to accuse myself before God, can I dismiss it in front of my fellow members of Christ’s body? I can’t deny it. Pride won’t do any good.

So an apology is in order. Though my intent was not disrespect of God, I managed it pretty well anyway. How easy it is to slip. It’s just a joke (one thinks) and next thing you know I’m not only profaning the sacred, but leading other’s to do so as well, and that is what really bothers me. I hijacked the thread pretty well too. And it’s been that way for the past few days. I got pulled over for speeding the other day. I knew better and did it anyway. It’s been this way for the past few days.

And so I do apologize. No excuses. I understand your disgust. The infraction was deserved. I have no doubt about God’s ability or willingness to forgive and hope that my fellow members of Christ’s body can do the same.

How can one not forgive after reading such a thorough and humble apology? 🙂

I’m thinking your post was removed because I don’t see any jokes from you except for the Vatican joke.
