What does it mean to be a man

There have been a lot of talk on here about womens roles, womens dress and even womens downfall. I am interested in everyones opinion of what it means to be a real man - husband, father, priest etc.

What is important and what is true ‘manliness’ - how has the role of man changed in the past 2000 years?

Just thought it would be fun to move away from women!

maturity
self-discipline and control of the passions
ability to direct impulses to good ends
ability to make and keep commitments
manly virtue–fortitude, courage, compassion, charity, right judgement, piety, etc.
ability to discern and make decisions based on the good of others: wife, family, community, country etc. rather than on self-interest
capable of true friendship with both men and women
trust in Divine Providence
 
Read “If” by Rudyard Kipling. It speaks to the maturity and integrity that is required to be a man.

In one word, I think of my husband. He is my rock. He is a man of deep faith who follows the advice of St.Francis and preaches constantly, but only uses words when necessary. He is extremely intelligent, has a very strong character, knows exactly who he is and what he wants, yet is always respectful of others and their right to be their own person. He’s very, very self-confident, confident enough that no matter how strong or accomplished I am he is never threatened and never feels less of a man. He’s generous with his time and his energy and although he’s not a patient person by nature, he’s very patient with me and our children. He is responsible and hard working and loyal. He loves deeply and constantly and he keeps his commitments. He also has a wickedly funny sense of humor.

Don’t I know it. When we were engaged I wrote his parents a thank you letter, thanking them for raising such a wonderful man. His father set a great example and his parents had a wonderful marriage.
He’s lucky too, with the appreciation he gets. 🙂

Honestly, I’d have to be a total moron not to appreciate him.:yup:

To add…

Ability & Strength to defend his convictions & beliefs regardless of circumstance, and not just physically.
Willingness to sacrifice ALL in defense of his family, friends, or country… physically if need be.
“No Man is Taller than when he stoops to help a Child”… or anyone weaker than himself…
Understand his place in the order of things:
Defender
Provider
Guardian
Knowing that it is better to share, than to take.
