What does it mean to "trust in the Lord"?

This is a very serious question. What does it really mean to “trust in the Lord”? I hear people use that phrase attempting to console others when times get tough, but personally I find it to be a woefully inadequate, and perhaps inappropriate response. Sure, I trust that the Lord will hear me, understand me, give me peace should I enter heaven, and that love and justice will ultimately prevail. But beyond this I am at a loss to understand this business of trusting in the Lord. What say you?
 
I hink it would be a good iidea to study the Catholic concept of “divine Providence”. There is a excellent little book put out by TAN about it which I have left at work. I will post the title later. For now check out this link to NEW ADVENT;

Some things need in depth explanations Beno, while others simply do not.

Your post had already addresed the question quite satisfactorily:
  • the Lord will hear me
  • understand me
  • give me peace should I enter heaven
  • love and justice will ultimately prevail
    Just believe in what you have said Beno.
There really is nothing else to add …

It means that in all situations in every need you have or will have and in every depth of pain you go through and in times when you cannot meet the demands of this world and especially when you understand and acknowledge that Jesus is the way the truth and the life the only way to the Father and that through Jesus you will have eternal life.
That Jesus gave His life to open the gates of heaven for you should you follow Him then should you believe in Him in this way then you have learned to trust in the Lord.trusting Jesus words that He left this world so that the spirit would come
Lastly God will allow you to go into the vallies into the tunnels that you cannot see the other end and onto the hills that seem so far away from your life and yet you trust that He is leading you truthfully in the right direction then you have gained faith in trusting God. Some calling it letting go and letting God.

I guess the short answer would be, to trust in the Lord, means that you accept that His will be done, in everything.

For me, I find that if I just let things flow as they will and not try to resist or change them, but rather place my trust in God, they turn out for the good, even though in the beginning, it seems too difficult and painful to accept.
Of course I’m not very good at this, so don’t think that I’ve reached anywhere near perfection in this area.:o

Ok… this is a wonderful question. I’m still unpacking this myself but I’ll try to share what I have learned and put it as simple as possible. Actually, it’s easier said than done.

What does it mean to “Trust in the Lord”? First off, I equate trust with belief. However, this belief is not a simple, “Oh, I believe”. It’s more like “I believe IN…” not “I believe THAT…”
To trust in God means to completely surrender yourself to him. Everything you have, everything you own, all your thoughts, all your words, all your worries, all your sorrows. But before we can completely do so, we need to seek him first. Trusting in God also means putting him above all things. God has to be the absolute number one and everything else second and yourself, third.

That’s what I’ve learned so far. I hope it helps.
 
Sorry, I just had to add more… Some things I just remembered. It’s really easier said than done if you ask me. But we try anyway.

Jesus is the perfect example of this trust. He trusted the father even to the point of death. And look what this trust got him to? Resurrection. An example of what we, one day, will experience.

Trust also exercises humility and obedience. This is what the people of God failed at in the Old Testament. They failed to trust God and went to try and do things on their own. Look where that got them. They were handed to their enemies.

The Blessed Mother trusted God when she gave her “yes”. She suffered but look where it got her? She now sits with her son, Jesus.
