Jesus referred to the Pharisees as people who "like places of honor at weddings, and front seats at synagogues. Is it wrong then to sit in the front, or important places at tables?

They were being vain, and wanted to appear powerful or important. We all struggle with this, to an extent. Jesus is just pointing out the vice of pride.

It’s not wrong in itself to be in a place of importance. It depends on the context, i.e whether it is unearned, whether there is excess.

It always comes down to motivation, right? Religion will sometimes attract those who want to be seen as ostentatiously pious. I’m sure, since Jesus’s message was largely against the status quo, he was pointing out the not so humble faux pious folks as contrasted to those there to worship the Father. He really was a radically fresh breath of air.

When someone invites you to a wedding feast, do not take the place of honor, for a person more distinguished than you may have been invited. 9 If so, the host who invited both of you will come and say to you, ‘Give this person your seat.’ Then, humiliated, you will have to take the least important place. 10 But when you are invited, take the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he will say to you, ‘Friend, move up to a better place.’ Then you will be honored in the presence of all the other guests. 11 For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”

I think that you should be glad the this person invited you to better position.

Pride - comes before the fall.

And there’s usually a ‘ pecking order ‘ with people.

Stay humble.
Like the guy at the temple with his head down,
saying, “ have mercy on me Lord, a sinner “

Some O.T kings - got assainated - by their own family members.
It’s not worth it - to grab such a seat of importance.
Better to have someone important promote you - than self promotion assumption.

Modern day life is FILLED with people
who are repeating, silently to themselves, these self empowering phrases - and macho one liners
And they walk around with a false image -
Like - inviting a demon of pride - within !
