What Does Paul Mean By Christ Is Proclaimed … ?

Shalom.

What did St Paul mean when he wrote, ‘Christ is proclaimed, and for that I am happy: and I shall go on being happy, too, because I know that this is what will save me, …’ The context is in Phil 1:18-26.

I am putting this thread here instead of in the apologetic section, so that both Catholics and non-Catholics can share with us your (name removed by moderator)ut too. What does your pastor/church teach on this or what is your understanding of this?

From the King James Version, the verses previous highlight that Paul is recognizing “how” the gospel of JESUS is being taught by others, some in a questionable fashion, but others in truth, and regardless as long as JESUS is being taught and discussed Paul is happy. The “word” about JESUS is spreading, which is his mission in Christ, so he see’s it being successful which will lead him, through the prayer of those who have converted, toward his salvation in Christ.

4And many of the brethren in the Lord, waxing confident by my bonds, are much more bold to speak the word without fear.

15Some indeed preach Christ even of envy and strife; and some also of good will:

16The one preach Christ of contention, not sincerely, supposing to add affliction to my bonds:

17But the other of love, knowing that I am set for the defence of the gospel.

18What then? notwithstanding, every way, whether in pretence, or in truth, Christ is preached; and I therein do rejoice, yea, and will rejoice.

19For I know that this shall turn to my salvation through your prayer, and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ,

How coud the gospel of Jesus being taught in ‘questionable fashion’ made Paul happy?

In NJB, the word Paul used was ‘save’. It does not make sense still that Paul should be saved by a gospel being preached incorrectly.

He said , he ‘will be saved by a Christ proclaimed’ (paraphrased).

Because his primary concern was that Christ was being proclaimed, however it was that He was being proclaimed.

In this context, he was speaking of being delivered from his current state of imprisonment, and this is, in fact, what happened. According to tradition (small-t), two years passed without his case being heard by the Emperor, and according to Roman law, that meant he was set free. Then he fulfilled his wish to travel to the Iberian peninsula. He eventually came back to Rome, where he had his second imprisonment and martyrdom.

I am putting up this thread out of curiosity and I thought I want to hear what others say about it. So thanks for the response. 

How was this done (Christ being proclaimed) especially in the context of this passage? What did Paul mean by it? I want to have a mental picture what and how that could have happened?

Thanks for the extra Biblical information (about him being imprisoned and later released). This seems to have connection with him being saved. What puzzled me then, if it was really so, how was Christ being proclaimed result in him being set free from the imprisonment of the Roman? Ha, ha, doesn’t make sense, does it?

Phil 1:18-26
18 But what does it matter? Only that in both ways, whether with false motives or true, Christ is proclaimed, and for that I am happy;
19 and I shall go on being happy, too, because I know that this is what will save me, with your prayers and with the support of the Spirit of Jesus Christ;

It means that the task given to the Apostles by Jesus in **Matt. 28:19-20 ** “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, to the close of the age.”

1. Was taken seriously
2. Was a work in progress [that continus until the end of time]
3. The responsibility to know, live and SHARE our Faith is a GRAVE Moral responsibilty fo all Christians and especailly for we Catholics.
