I encountered something very hurtful to me today, but while I feel pain to an extensive degree, I do not feel emotion. As if it had been sucked out of me. No joy, no sadness, no anger. I’m just… Me. Mentally I’m the same. Just very curious about my pain wlamd why it doesn’t feel like anything at all. Is this what peace is? Is this what being over something is?

God does say "He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” Rev 21:4

Have you prayed for discernment over this, for understanding of God’s peace? I highly recommend doing so, and in adoration when you have the time : )

As someone who has a lot of experience with psychologists - it’s probably psychological in nature, not spiritual. It’s not “fight or flight” ,it’s “fight, flight or freeze”. Our emotional " freeze" is when our emotions just shut down completely, in order to avoid feeling the pain at all.

If it was traumatic then you may be experiencing some kind of shock. This could be a defensive mechanism to keep you from becoming distressed to the point of exasperation. If you feel like you cannot or are not doing things that you would normally do like being kind to others or going out with your friends or getting up in the morning or checking the mail, then it could be a that your mind is not coping with grief adequately. If you feel like you are not adequately grieving properly then consider joining a grief support group at your church. Continue to praise God and offer to him your suffering and pray for discernment of this.

I am not a psychologist but I think if you had a chemical imbalance then it would be across the board…like no feelings ever about anything would sound like a chemical imbalance. Where as no feelings isolated to a particular experience sounds more like spiritual in nature, trauma or learned behavior towards stress.

Continue to discern and pray for peace because that is the end goal of adequately grieving sorrow. I can message you a great religious person to pray for you during distress if you like? God’s peace through his healing and protective pray have been such a blessing for me.

God bless!

Thanks guys! The pain is gone now, and there still is no emotion. Really odd since anticipating this moment has cause me a lot of emotional grief, but now; nothing. I’ll see how long this goes on. Surely I’m to feel the grief sometime or another.

So what does peace feel like though, in times of trouble? For future reference of course. So I don’t get mixed up again.

In times of trouble I find peace by entering into the moment fully and being completely realistic about what’s going on, putting aside both the past and the future - this removes all regret and all fear, and allows me to master the situation.

Peace is much better when you ask God what it feels like in prayer ; ) Try praying the rosary in a contemplative fashion, which usually takes long for me than the usual 15 minutes.

Another great experience of God’s peace is in adoration. I find the more I go the more I get out of it. At first I just felt calm and enjoyed being still in the Lord without worrying, a sense of trust that God has got you in His hands. However the more I went the more intense the feeling became. His peace would come over me not just in a mental fashion but I could feel His comfort all through me, it is just too hard to explain. I will have to pray for the words if words are possible to describe His peace. Like a bath of comfort.

God bless!

Peace is a feeling or sense of calm or calmness that comes over you. In my opinion, it can also be a sense of joy and trust and hope in the Lord, like everything will be fine, too.

Like someone else said, it could just be that you are feeling so hurt right now, that you are just feeling kind of numb, where you just don’t feel “anything” emotionally, at this time.

That has happened to me too, when I have been hurt, where I have just been so shocked by the rather deep way that someone has gone out of their way to deliberately hurt me, that I could not even begin to imagine it, so my mind just kind of went into shock, while I tried to process what happened. 😦

In this case too, I would give your hurt over to God. The good Lord knows what it is like to feel that kind of emotional pain and betrayal, and He will help you get through it, too.

God bless you. 🙂

Learned behavior toward stress might be like desensitization. Desensitization is not really a good thing, I cannot think of a good example.

I have had several long difficult valleys where darkness shrouded my being. It was a very terrifying time and I second-guessed everything about myself -especially my connection with our Lord Jesus Christ. At the time I didn’t “feel” joy, peace, happiness - or any of those emotions at all…but as I look back to that time I did have a sense of Peace - He was my Anchor, my Daddy, my constant Helper. The Holy Spirit kept my fading light of faith lit and I learned what it meant to have an earthly and heavenly Father. It’s just like the "Footprints in the sand poem…I thought I was walking alone but He was actually carrying me through it

God bless you!

I had been in counseling for a few years trying to get at the root of my depression when my psychiatrist suggested I see this therapist. He used a technique called EMDR and it is a desensitization technique that accesses both sides of your brain as you recall certain things that may have happened in the past. I went way past the obvious problems into issues that I had with my dad. It actually made such an impact in my life that within 7 or 8 sessions I knew I had finally reached the summit of my despair and what trauma was still causing it.

My sister’s therapist has used it for her, as well and she is beginning to not be terrified of those thoughts that were bottled up inside.

It’s a wonderful solution to someone’s life-long PTSD - but I would suggest you make sure the person is well qualified and is knowledgeable about the technique.

God’s wonderful blessings go out to you and others whose lives are impacted by some trauma…God provides wonderful helps through these

I had not heard of that. I suppose under the guidance of a therapist it would be helpful in some circumstances like that. My concern is desensitization can lead to acceptance of bad situations instead of fighting against it. People can become desensitized to violence say and so when it happens they may no respond like God would want them too…not to become Luke Warm about problems I suppose would be my concern. For PTSD I would have thought therapists would focus on changing thought patterns rather than desensitization.

God bless.

Growing in my experience of peace during adoration I would say the peace can be so intense that it is like enjoying the pleasure of drinking wild flower honey or mango nectar without the worry of calories and imagine if you could feel that sense of pleasure throughout your body. Who needs Yoga when you have adoration. I thank God the Holy Spirit led me to the Catholic church. He is love… intense love!
