What Does Reason Mean?

What is reason? It seems in spritual writings to be more than our logical abilities.
For instance, I have seen it written that Mary in the womb grew in holiness and reason.
There is talk of partaking in reason and other such things, and it was even said that ie Plato partook of the Word for he lived of reason, what does this all mean?
