The dictionary definition of Testament is:

  1. *]Something that serves as tangible proof or evidence: The spacious plan of the city is a testament to the foresight of its founders.
*]A statement of belief; a credo: my political testament.
*]Law. A written document providing for the disposition of a person’s property after death; a will.
*] Testament Bible. Either of the two main divisions of the Bible.
*] Archaic. A covenant between humans and God.

#4 applies (obviously) but I was wondering in which sense was the word “Testament” chosen originally.

1, 2, & 5 could all fit. Anyone know what sense “Testament” was chosen to describe the Old and New Testament? All three?

Actually. #5 is closer to the meaning of testament since it is descriptive of God’s dealings with men, both BC and AD, which is what the Bible describes.

I google searched and all signs point to #5.

I have been thinking for quite some time now that #1 was the correct sense. :o In my defense #5 is archaic.
