One of the questions that I often have conflicts with my Protestant colleagues is the issue of putting on jewelry.What does the Bible really say about jewelry in light of

1 Peter 3; 3-5
Exodus 32; 2-3
Isaiah 3; 18-23
Isaiah 3 16-24

among other verses?

God Bless!

Peter seams to be referring to wives placing their value in marriage on how well to do they can appear.

Unless you plan on making a golden calf from your earrings then exodus doesn’t apply.

Isaiah appears to be referring to punishment for when the Jews fell into Idolatry.

1 Peter 3:3-5 said:
3 Your adornment should not be an external one: braiding the hair, wearing gold jewelry, or dressing in fine clothes,

4 but rather the hidden character of the heart, expressed in the imperishable beauty of a gentle and calm disposition, which is precious in the sight of God.
5 For this is also how the holy women who hoped in God once used to adorn themselves and were subordinate to their husbands;

The typical marital virtues of women of the ancient world, obedience, reverence, and chastity (1 Peter 3:1-2), are outlined here by the author, who gives them an entirely new motivation: Christian wives are to be virtuous so that they may be instrumental in the conversion of their husbands. In imitation of holy women in the past (1 Peter 3:5) they are to cultivate the interior life (1 Peter 3:4) instead of excessive concern with their appearance (1 Peter 3:3).
Exocus 32:2-3:
2 Aaron replied, “Have your wives and sons and daughters take off the golden earrings they are wearing, and bring them to me.”
3 So all the people took off their earrings and brought them to Aaron,
In typical Protestant fassion they split paragraphs and do not give the full meaning of the text. Continue to read and you will see the next verse
4**who accepted their offering, and fashioning this gold with a graving tool, made a molten calf. Then they cried out, “This is your God, O Israel, who brought you out of the land of Egypt.” In this light, we need to keep our jewlery on.

Isaiah 3:16-24 said:
16 The LORD said: Because the daughters of Zion are haughty, and walk with necks outstretched Ogling and mincing as they go, their anklets tinkling with every step,
17 The Lord shall cover the scalps of Zion’s daughters with scabs, and the LORD shall bare their heads.
18 On that day the LORD will do away with the finery of the anklets, sunbursts, and crescents;
19 the pendants, bracelets, and veils;
20 the headdresses, bangles, cinctures, perfume boxes, and amulets;
21 the signet rings, and the nose rings;
22 the court dresses, wraps, cloaks, and purses;
23 the mirrors, linen tunics, turbans, and shawls.
24 Instead of perfume there will be stench, instead of the girdle, a rope, And for the coiffure, baldness; for the rich gown, a sackcloth skirt. Then, instead of beauty:

This addresses attitude. What is the ladies attitude towards the jewlery. Does it make them feel special or does it make them feel superior?

Please don’t tell me it’s sinful to like jewelry! :eek: :crying:
