What does the Church teach about the story of Adam and Eve?

What is the magisterial teaching on the story of Adam and Eve? How long ago? Is the story poetic and if so, how do we interpret? Did the serpent really talk or is that also poetic? Would like to have some answers for non beleiving friends.
