What does the Creed mean by "proceeds?"

Hello,
I am trying to understand what it means by “proceed”, as in the “the Son proceeds from the Father” and “the Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father and the Son.” Does this make the Father greater than the Son or the Spirit?
