I am reading the bible for the first time in my life and am currently going through RCIA in the hopes of baptism shortly after my 40th birthday!

I started out reading a very nice NAB that my wife purchased me, but I happened across an RSV-CE (a small, two tone leather bound bible from Oxford Press) that I absolutely love. The manner of the translation just seems more “holy” to me, while -for the most part- remaining quite readable.
I keep my NAB handy in case I run into an obscure passage of scripture, and for the notes that don’t appear in the much smaller RSV-CE.
My dilemma is this: I see an occasional asterisks in the scripture of the RSV-CE and I cannot for the life of me find a place where my bible explains their appearance.
Thanks for the help!
