What does this mean?

I was sent a prayer yesterday and part of it says:

“Grant me…Temperance not to accept everything at face value”

I’m not entirely sure what this means and was wondering if anyone could shed some light onto this for me. Thank you
 
I take it to mean, grant me the restraint to not accept something because of the way it first looks or seems, without thinking what else it could mean.
