what does this mean?

Hi everyone!

A family member had a question that hopefully you’ll know the answer to. The question regards the tapestry that hung from the balcony when Pope Francis was announced. I can’t figure out how to paste a link with the image, so I hope you’ll still be able to help. It’s the tapestry, that I believe, typically contains the predecessor pope’s coat of arms.

The question is: does the image on the tapestry (a star or cross, maybe?) have a particular meaning or is it decorative? If there is a meaning, what is it?

Behind the white part of the Tapestry was the seal the Pope Francis chose when he makes it official like you siad.

each one of the aspects has a specific meaning

the gold star represents the Virgin Mary
the spikenard flower is associated with Saint Joseph
and the IHS emblem is the symbol of the Jesuits.
